The quality of Fender MIM guitars has greatly increased in the past few years. I have an MIM standard, (that I have modded greatly), but I am extremely happy with it. There is little difference between the High end Mexican instruments, and the americans. So if he likes the guitar, why should it matter where it was made?

I actually have couple MIM strats and a tele and they play great. The only modification I made was upgrading the pickups. But as far as the MIM guitars being good guitars, they are and the rest is up to what kind of amp you use and how well you play.

i have a MiM... i was actually planning on getting and american, but played a MiM and it was a great guitar for much less, so i got it... they are by no means bad, just SLIGHTLY less quality, but nothing to get worried about.... if he enjoys playing it, it shouldnt matter what country it is from

I've had several USA Stratocasters in the past, '79 Anniversary, '90s
Voodoo Stratocaster, 2 '90s American Standards and a Japan reissue.
Now playing on a Olympic White '60s Classic MIM upgraded with Seymour
Duncan Alnico II Pro pickups and a Gotoh vintage trem with steel block.
Looks vintage, sounds great and is a bargain compaired with USA Strats.
Still want a Custom Shop NOS '60s Stratocaster...keep on dreaming

Peter

Your son has a solid guitar. I said this before, if it plays and sounds good it's a good guitar. MIM guitars are well made work horses that get the job done. If you need better tone upgrade the pickups. Everyone has their own setups I sure do. I had a MIM for a while and it played good but the tone was kinda thin and noisy so I changed the PU's. I then upgraded to an American deluxe V neck which I got at my local music store on sale for around 900. That one looked, sounded and played fantastic. I gave the MIM to my nephew which he loves. When he comes over I like to take trips down memory lane and play his MIM and he plays my ADeluxe strat. He likes his MIM better and I like mine especially with the SCN's.

I love my MIM with the satin finish neck. It's a solid guitar and every bit a Stratocaster.

He'll be happy with his new guitar and after he puts some miles on it he'll like it even more. I've changed some hardware just for cosmetic effect, not because there were any issues with the original parts.

Be happy, I didn't have a Strat until I was 46!

there are soooo many copies and knock offs out there. having a strat that says "fender" on it means you got the real deal. i play a mim, and i love it.

Let’s see Fender’s Ensenada Mexico factory (MIM) is located 70 miles south of the international border, a 90-minute drive from San Diego. Fender’s Corona California factory (MIA) is around 75-80 miles from San Diego. So the MIM and MIA factories are approximately 150 Miles apart from each other. My point is that with the factories being so close to each other that the quality control should be fantastic between them. American management can drive to the Mexican factory in a heartbeat if necessary and correct any problems. The difference between $399 and $999 is 150 miles. LOL

This is a cool link to show what's done between factories...
