Hwy 1 will have a satin finish where as the American standard will be a gloss. The big headstock sounds like a Hwy 1 to me. If your body is gloss you may have a MIM 70's strat or American 70's strat which will have the 3 bolt neck plate. As for tone, find out the types of gear those guys use and go experiment.

John Mayer's pickups are: 3 Big Dipper Single-Coil Strat Pickups with Special “Scooped” Mid-range Voicing to Meet John Mayer’s Specifcations. His amps are K&M sig. series.

Eric Claptons: 3 Vintage Noiseless Pickups (Neck, Middle, Bridge) Active Mid-Boost Circuit. His amp set up: Fender Custom Shop Tweed Twin Amp (1957 Tweed Reissue)
Leslie Speaker
Vox Wah Wah Pedal
Boss TR-2 Tremelo Pedal
Box to switch from the amp to the Leslie or to select both
He has also played through Marshall's back in the day.

Jimi's pickups I believe are hand reversed wound to 1967 spec's Giving you that Hendrix sound. He played through Marshalls.

Go check out different amps first, they have a lot to do with your tone.

If you really like to tear it up, check the new Vox AD30XL. Go to the VOX website and you'll see what I mean... and only $299 street price!

If you have the buck and want some classic tone, get a Fender Twin.

If you want something high end botique, check out the new Mackie HotWire.

Strataholic's suggestions are excellent, you can also try a twin reverb. As for Mayer's tone, you will have to try different amps and maybe some effects. The pickups he uses have a lot to do with his overall tone. I play my strat which has SCN's through a 65' Fender Princeton amp for blues and such. For heavier situations and all around use I use a Marshall JVM 410C. That strat and Marshall tone definitely has the Hendrix vibe. My Fender Princeton has that classic bite where as the Marshall adds a lot more mid and bottom.

I played a Tele through a blues JR over the weekend and it sounded killer, I was jamming some Johnny Cash, Elvis and a little Waylon and I was stoked on the tone. 8)

I'm curious, how did the "Fender tech guys rewire it for a warmer tone"? What did they rewire, and what was used to change the sound?? Just curious.
