I was offered one of these in LPB w/maple and not sure what to make of this statement:

"The Corona, Ca plant opened its doors in the very last months of 1985. Production started off very slow at the new factory with only a handful of guitars being produced per day during the initial months. These early Corona era reissue are very high quality instruments, and like their older Fullerton era cousins have fantastic build quality. When the new factory opened there was still an excess of parts left over from the Fullerton, Ca factory that were used in production. For these reasons the very first Corona era reissues had the same body contours as Fullerton era reissues. Likewise, left over pots, pickups, and capacitors were also still used on the first reissues to come out of the Corona, Ca factory."

All the pots date 32nd week of 86. Neck dates Sep of 86. Comes with original case and a 3 way switch installed. No fret buzz and 7 lbs 9 oz weight.

I haven't played it yet, but wondering if worth the 2 hour trip to check it out and make an offer...and what would be a fair ballpark offer if a nice player?

Miami Mike...Definately worth the two hour trip. These guitars were no different in my opinion than the Fullerton Strats...I have a '82 '57 Vintage Reissue from Fullerton and they were great guitars...but so were the vintage reissues from Corona when they started production. Too bee honest, did not feel or hear much of a differnce between any of them I have played over the years. Are there minor differences? Yes, but mostly in the body contours (fullertons were more curvey)...and the pickup bobbins were different...but not much else. The finishes on both were great.

Played quite a few during the 86 to 90 period while working part time at a music store...They are excellent guitars. As for price, the earlier they are the higher the price, but IMHO if it has the original case and all the case candy and is in mint condition, expect to pay around $2K + so if you can find one for around $1200 - $1600 that would be a pretty good price I think.

FWIW

According to A.R.Duchossoir, production in Corona began in October 1985 w/10 employees producing 5 guitars a day, and only '57 and '62 VRI's . I appears that Fender's Bill Schulz got the first one, and Hank Marvin, the second. Much of this is consistent between Taylor, Duchossoir, and Wheele'r writings.

Production of the new American Standard began in the fall of 1986 and was officially unveiled at the winter NAMM of 1987.

Which of these two lines of guitars does the one in question represent?

ZZ he was talking about the Reissues not the American Standards.

The reissue in the pics Mike has a little wear and tear so should be able to get it a bit cheaper. Love that LPB color with a maple neck! Certainly worth a trip and the case looks brand new on the inside at least!

Good luck

I could have had it for a grand, but the all original frets had
a little too much wear for my liking and I didn't want to change
anything about it.

Clearly understood, but your input greatly appreciated. The dates on this transition period appear to run between 1982 and 1986 depending upon which historian[s] one is sourcing. Mike and I were sharing notes about this privately,[in particular, the link he posted] but I wanted to leave it to him to bring us all current with respect to his search as he saw fit. The most notable individuals to be playing these guitars from the get go, seem to have been Hank Marvin, and David Gilmour.

My current thoughts/findings were all posted in last year's similiar thread
about stratosphere/reliablefender/Daddys.

Man, I say grab it anyway, get a replacement neck and some new tuners and play it. That way you have the original neck with the original frets that you can always put back on if you decide to sell it later on. Just a thought...
