I just ran across an American Standard at a pawn shop that has been anything but babied.

It's going to need some help in setup with the strings all adjusted a different heights and fairly minor scratches here and there. What concerns me the most is that the back of the neck is anything but smooth and quite a bit of wear on the frets. I don't mind wear if it's from regular constant use but this looks to be more like abuse with light gouges up and down the back of the neck.

The pickups, bridge/saddles, and tuners look to be factory stock.

They're only asking $399 for it but if the neck would need to be replaced, it seems like it may be too much to save this thing. What do you guys think?

Hello TinleyJake,

The neck gouges wouldn't bother me but
beat frets, I'd give this guitar a pass for that
kind of money.

Cheers.

Yeah, fret dressing or worst refretting is quite costly. You can get a great brand spanking new Standard Strat for that price (tax and shipping free!) from any online music store. It won't be as nice as the American Standard but it'll sure beat playing on tired frets. If you're not in a rush save a little more and get the Deluxe Player's Strat or a Highway-1.

What's the serial number? Perhaps it's vintage? Be careful asking the pawn shop owner about the serial number. It might be hot and he might think your a cop! LOL

Just go and play it again and make a mental note of the first 4 numbers and digits of the serial... that's all you'll need to date it.

I could kick myself 'cause I passed on a super strat in a pawn shop for $400 a couple of years ago. Invariably, I make the wrong decisions when it comes to musical instruments.
