So Fender has a host of neck profiles... especially on "Artist" models. At the moment, I'm looking at the MIM Artist models and trying to figure out which is best for me.... But is there a diagram that shows how different these neck profiles really are???

Robert Cray Strat: 60's "C" Shape
Jimmy Vaughn: Soft "V" Shape
Kenny Wayne Shepherd: Thick "C" Shape
Buddy Guy: Soft "V" Shape

Then when it comes to MIA Artists:
Eric Clapton: Soft "V" Shape
Stevie Ray Vaughn: Thick "Oval" Shape
John Mayer: Thick "C" Shape

Then of course there is the modern "C" shape.

these are the artists I closely relate my playing to. I'm really leaning towards JV or KWS Strats....

Welcome to definitely one of the most controversial topics of the past three months. A great deal of blood has been spilled over this baby, for sure. At the end of the day I have to suggest to you what is pretty much the feeling all around. You have to shop the shops, find these guitars and play them. There's no way any of these diagrams are going to substitute for how these necks feel in your hands. Very recently, Mike Eldred observe that each of these necks gets a final hand sanding and they will, out of necessity, have an imperceptibly different feeling from one to the other in the same neck carve. From my own personal experience, the soft-V neck on the Vaughn and Guy guitars is the company's generic soft-V, also found on the Deluxe V-neck. The Clapton 'soft-V' is totally different feel and exclusive to that model. It has a far slimmer feel to it and must be compared, in hand, to the former to fully appreciate same. The V-neck on the '57VHR is somewhere between the first two described.

As far as the so-called C-shaped necks, that's a player's preference. The modern-C has a fuller shoulder. It's on practically everything new that Fender releases. Not being a fan of same, I avoid them, save for the vintage C neck on my Gilmour and the 60's fast neck on my Les Paul.

Keep in mind that artist preference anticipation may not be realized in the playability of the guitar for your.

Happy hunting. Let us know what you wind up with.

Doc.

Hi Doc
I really like reading stuff you write. I remember you welcomed me here too you were first friend I added.
Now my question...
Do you feel the Modern C and the Gibson 60s slim tapper are alot the same? I sort of noticed it on my Deluxe Strat and my Studio Les Paul

IMHO the Gibson fast neck is slimmer than the modern C. That's simply an empirical observation based upon the anatomy of my left hand. It may not hold true for you.

Its a different feeling neck for sure. I have to force myself to put down the Strat and pickup the Les Paul. It takes a little while to get used to it but once I do I can make it sound almost as good as the strat.
Anyway a lil off topic there. I have only played the modern c I would love to feel the others.

I agree. The diagrams help you to understand the ralationship between the various profiles. But your mind and hand may not prefer the same profile. When I was shopping for my Strat about a year ago, I was very concerned with getting a slim neck and not one that was too large. I got the modern C, which is a good profile. But, in the past year I've played countless other guitar brands and models and I find I like a bit of chunk to the neck. My mind didn't totally agree with this but my hand won over and I bought an LP with a 50's round neck and love it. I have a '57 Tele with a U shape that I love. My next Strat will probably be a V of some sort. My hand hasn't told my mind which one yet.

Only thing we got in my area is a couple of guitar centers neither carry any of the v necks or reissues in stock. That deluxe v neck in black has always interested me.
I have never seen a clapton or beck on the wall either. Just standards and deluxes.

For the Eric Johnson sig strat, I've heard some say the neck is a soft V near the first fret and gradually changes into more of a "C" shape. Is this true or is it just your standard '57 soft V shape?

I recently took a factory tour (highly recommend it to anyone who gets a chance) and there had to be over 50 neck templates. We also got a chance to watch the necks being sanded by hand, as others have mentioned they will all vary slightly even amongst the same style.

Many of us are familiar with the peg board which hangs all those master blanks.
