It has nothing to do with the location of the screws. It has to do with a desire to do one of two things or possibly both. (1) Decking the trem brings the trem plate in direct contact with the body wood of the guitar. This is done with the intention of increasing sustain. Whether or not it works has been the subject of some debate. (2) Blocking the trem disables the trem and forces it to act like a fixed bridge. The location of the mounting points are not a deciding factor in either decision.

Four springs in the trem are enough to keep the bridge decked on the guitar surface and it won't move. If you want to be absolutely sure, use five.

It's been a while since I last posted to this thread... since then I've experimented with both blocking the tremolo and docking the bridge. It seems the blocking makes the guitar "brighter" sounding than I prefer so I am going with the docking (so increase in brightness). I initially used my three black springs and had to really crank the claw screws to dock the bridge to prevent the detuning when stretching strings. I am now using 5 stainless? springs that dock the bridge with less claw tightening. My question... does using the 5 stainless vs 3 black springs change the "brightness" of the guitar sound? It seems to me it does but maybe I'm just imagining this and do not want to experiment with it more. It would seem once docked it would not matter the type or number of springs used. So I'm asking what has been the experience of others doing the docking?

Thanks! Tom

yes it is possible, one of the ways is to lock it down with a piece of wood between the body and the block, there may be some other ways but this seems to be the easiest and the most common

I simply tighten the screws of the spring claw in the back, which lets the baseplate of the trem rest on the body. If necessary I add more springs but usually 3 is enough.

I don't bother with wood blocks.

"Decking", not "docking". Docking is for a laptop.

With 5 springs, and stainless vs the black ones, you might be hearing a little "ringing" sound from the springs themselves. It is a slight reverb type sound from the springs being stretched tight and resonating due to the vibration from the guitar and amp. This is the way that I have mine (5 springs very tight), and I like the spring sound. Some people do not like the sound from the tight springs when decked this way, so they use little flexible plastic tubes inside the springs to kill the springs sound.

Por favor, disculpe mi español, no se llega a la práctica con mucha frecuencia.
