Hey, I'm not that much of an Anorak, I only have two! That third one was a google search. Might eBay another one though - even though I hardly drink tea or coffee. Damages the voice you see.

Hi, man. Yep, the Selmer. I just need to get some software onto this computer so's I can get the pics outta the camera, then I need to get to grips with this PhotoBucket malarkey, and then we'll get this thread right back off topic again.

Sunny day: I'm in town right now - I divide my time pretty equally between London and sunny (!!!) Devon. Which means really that I live on Great Western Railways. I'm riding through Hampshire most weeks: I wave out the window but you never wave back...

I'll get onto those pics - right after The Simpsons! (That makes me sound about 35 years younger than I really am. See my post about Who concerts in the '70s for a clue to the sad reality...)

It's used loads here! Just means.. A loser, a geek, someone that gets really excited about crappy things. Someone that collects bottlecaps would be an anorak here.

OK, folks: forgive the interuption, please. We're going way off topic again for a minute here (see page 60 of this thread).

Hey dude - does your guitar have a three digit number on the bottom right of the body? Mine says 222 - and it is to my understanding only about 1000 selmer guitars were made originally. They were made in Charing Cross, London. This type of guitar, (as I'm told) was one of the first made - I believe that Selmer made them from 1922-32?

I got the guitar from an old friend who's now in his 80s, he played guitar a long while ago. It's currently in the restoration process, but here's the headstock:

And the serial:

At least I THINK it's a serial. Could be the name of the guitar..?

Right, Ed. If I've mastered this photobucket business, then here's my Selmer (one of my Strats in the background for those as are already losing their patience over this):

Here's that number, exactly the same as yours, so yes, it's the model number. Weird place to put it...:

But, ohmygod, look at the pickguard repair this poor thing has sustained. What the heck am I going to do about that? And what about the tuners:

Before I knew more about it I was just going to lay into this little guitar as a project. Now, if it is really a Selmer made in the '20s I have to be a little more thoughtful about it. Whatchathink?

Cheers - and thanks, y'all

Hell's teeth, that's not kind. No-one's pretending these are vintage Martins, but if they're made in the 1920s they deserve kinder treatment than that. Still, I suppose it increases the value of the surviving articles, if not to a very princely sum.

Whatever it is, we clearly have ringers, though your's is in considerably better condition than mine. I'm missing the badge on the headstock, I have a couple of wrong tuner keys, and that dismal pickguard repair - brass screws, I ask you. On the other hand, I don't have those marks on the back. Looks a bit like someone was drawing out a chord diagram... Probably an off-set from a sheet of paper that lay against the guitar in its case, one hot, sticky day.

Do you have a case, by the way? Mine has an early version of a gigbag: a thin brown canvas affair. Also, some pitch-pipes.

So whatchathink? Ultimately, what do we have here? How far do you think I should go in rectifying the mistreatment mine has had, or leaving it alone? As I say, I was going to use it as a project, take the finish back to bare wood and re-do it. But I guess really now I should keep the original lacquer...? Also, what kind of set would you string yours up with? I've never looked into "vintage" string sets: does such a thing exist?

Lots of questions. Interested to hear any thoughts.

Over... - C

And to all those wondering what any of this has to do with Stratocasters - thank you for your forbearance.

Well, dude, sounds like you're itching to answer your own question, there. So, why don't you tell us? What do those necks do for you? Don't be modest, now...
