This pic illustrates the correct pickguard configuration for a '62 Stratocaster. The location of the red-circled screw differentiates it from the 1964 and later guards, which yours seems to be.

As well, note the dot positioning at the 12th fret -- on guitars up through circa mid-63, the dots were nearly perfectly bisected by the A and B strings. Later that same year, Fender switched from the rosewood "slab" fretboard to the laminated rosewood type. The distance between the dots was reduced coincident with the changeover to the lam-board.

It might not be a bad idea to disassemble this instrument to ascertain just exactly what you have. Look for a hand-written penciled date on the heel of the neck and make note of any markings you find in the neck pocket and/or the pickup routs. If you do not find an unused pickguard screw hole adjacent to the middle pickup it's a safe assumption that you have something other than a '62 body.

Good luck

This is quite enlightening for me. I may have to disassemble the guitar as you have suggested. I just assumed that it was a '62 due to this...

No idea but if you look a page back you'll see the neck on mine has a black truss hole too and its older than 09.

Yeah, I don't think that's a new feature. I think sometimes there is a rosin-like residue in the hole that may give it a different color. The tinting on the maple neck/headstock and the Fender Logo are definite differences though.

Oh, and btwade, the hss sounds GREAT, just not when I'm playing it. That lake placid blue was a very close second choice for me. Also, there was a recent price drop at GC/MF in case you're interested. Good luck!

I didn't forget about you guys! I finally broke down and used a bit more of my savings for a new computer (with both speakers and USB ports gone...it was time). I will post pictures by Thursday 8)

Doesnt that dot below the three signify a reissue? I read that on some vintage collector site though i cant remember which. They do it with serial numbered tele bridges too.
