My 1995 MIM Fender Squier Series Strat. I've since put a GFS Big Block Bridge, new pots and a w/b/w guard on.

It does in my book. Heck, even the lowly Starcaster says "Strat" on the box!

Schmintan, congratulations on an extremely fine guitar. Do you have much experience with Strats, and if so how would you compare this to others? I wonder if the neck on yours feels as though it were carved by Angels ? (the maple one on mine does).

This is my first fender, I dont have a huge range of expirience for comparison. before this i had (still have) an epiphone LP 100 which although is not a fantastic guitar, was got for me by hard graft from my dad, and so has a special place in my collection. I have been up until recently using an Ibanez, which is not of a lesser quality to the fender, its just a very different animal. difficult to compare. like comparing cheese to glass! Both are great guitars in their own right.

When purchasing though, i was in a music store and played the deluxe, an american std, a mexican and a squire, to see if there was a difference in necks, or people were just being pretentious about it.

There was very little difrerence between the Am Std and the dlx. One mexican i played wasnt great, but another one was just as good as the Am Std.

The squire, although a fine guitar for the price was way off the feel of the others. the deluxe was the best, but not by much in comparison to the Standard. I guess the extras, different bridge, heads, S1 and noiseless pickups are what justifies the extra cost.

What i didnt like about the mexican was the difference in quality from one to the next. id never buy one without playing it, but id still totally buy a good one.

the main differences really are little touches, such as finish, which was not so great on the squire, or things like on the american and deluxe, the truss rod cavity has wood around the top, but jst plastic tubing on the mexican and strat. little things that all add up to make a guitar "feel" better.

strangely also, weight was different in all, even though i thought they were all alder bodies with maple necks.

to conclude my ramble, yea, the deluxe has a great neck, but not by much, so if you want to save on a strat, an american standard is still a top class purchase, as is a mexican, as long as you can play it first.
