Hi all,
New here but I have a question. I have a MIM HH, blacktop strat. 5 way switch a volume and two tone knobs. Can I add s-1 switch pot to this setup? And does anyone have a HH strat with s-1 switching?

TIA
Doug

Unless the Blacktop pickups are splitable, which I don't beleive they are, an S-1 will do you no good. If they are splitable, you may be able to wire it up like this:

Duncan vintage alnico humbuckers are splittable since Blacktop Strats sport a 5-way super switch.

If that is what is in the Blacktop, then the diagram I referenced should work. :D

Thanks for the reply. Looks like it would work. Now the question is would it be worth it?
I will have to call my local dealer and get a price on adding the pot and wiring it.
Anyone got an idea on what it might cost?
Anyone using this setup?

TIA
Doug

I doubt it will be cheap to have it done.

Is it worth it is a question you will have to answer yourself, based on your playing style and music played. Look at all the combinations that are available in the link I posted. Do you need all that? Personally, I am quite happy with 3 positions on a 2-pickup guitar and 5 positions on a 3-pickup guitar. And I don't even use all of them!

I can vouch for these service diagrams because I used the American Standard HSS service diagram to change my 2000 HSS MIM Strat to S-1 switching. If you have access to printer that can print 11"x17", you will be able to read the schematic a whole lot easier. I didn't do a blow-by-blow description of wiring it up, but here is the modification thread (see page 3):

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=52076

In addition to the splitable humbuckers (or Trembucker if you get Seymour Duncan), you will need to purchase a 5-way superswitch, S-1 switch, and S-1 knob. I went ahead and replaced the tone pots also. There are probably many places to get these parts, but I used these guys:

I know I could have spent less, but my total (electronics, pickups, knobs, and new pickguard) was about $335. I did all the work myself, so there was no labor cost.

Thanks for the info. My strat is a HH with a 5 way switch. Will that switch work or do I need a different 5 way switch?

P.S. How do I add pictures in here????

If your guitar uses a super 4-megapole 5-way selector, there's no need to use a different switch.

The super 5-way pickup switch will increase the flexibility for other options -

but if you want

1. neck
2. neck+middle
3. middle
4. bridge+middle
5. bridge

it would be a waste - you can always just split the humbuckers with the S1 system or a mini 2-way toggle.

1. Create an account within a free picture managing website (Flickr, ImageShack, PhotoBucket) and upload your images there.

2. Use the IMG icon in the control panel to use the corresponding tags.

3. Paste the URL containing the media and drag your mouse pointer over the Internet address. Press the IMG icon to insert the tags between the URL. NOTE - Make sure to close the IMG tag with a backslash.

4. Done!

Hope this information helps a lot ! :D

The 5-way superswitch is the same for all pickup configurations.
Chromeface explained how to add pictures really well! I use photobucket myself.

Hi Doug & Welcome to the Forum!

Oooh! Just seen this. S-1 switch wiring with humbuckers.... interesting!

Before you go buying any parts, why not tell us which additional 5 pickup combinations you hope to get from adding the S-1 switch and/or if you want to change your existing 5.

Personally, I'd be inclined to keep the current 5 pup selections and see if its possible use the S-1 to provide both pups in series combos (whether the HB is split of not).

Keep us posted!

Andy

@ andybighair

It's possible to tap/split all the three humbuckers together using the S1 or we need a 2-way mini-toggle to do this operation?

Howdy!

Yep, you can split all three HB's with an S-1 switch, but they would all be split at the same time. For versatility I'd go with the toggle switches that way you could have full and split combos.

Cheers!

Andy
