I have been playing for a couple of months (although had possession of guitars that I played around with in the army and college...years ago). I mainly just play around with chords and download tab off the internet and find new alternative rock/rock song parts that I like (not good enough for most songs and I think a lot of the tab I get is a little screwy). Anyway, I have a Squier Affinity Tele and a small Marshall amp (10 I believe) and a Danelectro Fab distortion pedal- which gives me buzz, but from I read here that is common on single pick-up Teles?

Went to a GC, picked up a Strat HSS (Mexican I think since it was $429). Plugged it into a small Marshal amp and was completely blown away! I mean that thing rocked! Am seriously thinking of getting one in the future.

My question... and this may sound stupid. I'm used to the strings on my Squier being "closer" to the neck of the guitar. I mean I don't have to press far or very hard to get a chord or note. The Fender Strat's strings seemed very far from the neck. It seemed as if I had to press a long way to the neck. Is it me? Or is this the way good guitars are supposed to be. I sort of like my Squier set-up... or is this wrong?

The one you played at GC needed a setup. You're probably lucky your Squire didn't need one, it sounds like it's set up about right if you're not getting any string buzz with it.

yeah, when you purchase a guitar some places may set it up for you... they set the action and intonation and other things which should give you the optimum set up for the best tone and feeling you can get

Right - depending of the condition of the frets (even on a new model) the strings can set very close to the neck; about 1/8". Hope that helps!

Dont worry, if you like the tone of the guitar there should be no problem getting the action (how far the strings are from the fingerboard) set to your liking. Get the guitar you like and make it yours. Good Luck.

A $45.00 professional setup will take care of the string height problem.
