My gear setup is very simple, Eric Johnson Strat, Keeley "Baked" Ibanez Tubescreamer, Line 6 Spider II HD. I know, I know, solid state amp with a tubscreamer... I'm saving for a Deluxe Reverb.

Anyway I noticed a lot more than "hiss" when I plugged in the tubescreamer, I could actually hear what sounded like a radio station. I bought the pedal of Ebay but I believe it to be genuine, it has the blue keeley sticker on the outside, the white LED, RC4558P chip, and the inside is signed by two people and also has a clear keeley sticker.

My question is, what should I do to combat this? One of the cables I'm using is the cheap cable that comes with the EJ strat, could that be the culprit? I know single coils are noisy, but should they be picking up radio waves like this? What would be the best steps to try and diagnose this problem, should I start with a more high quality guitar cable or is it more likely the single coils?

Thanks for any help!

Up until recently I had a Keeley Baked Mod TS9. It never picked up stray radio frequencies but it was a little on the noisy side. The last few years or so I've slowly been selling off lesser pedals and replacing with higher grade stuff. I have a number of Fulltone pedals and they all seem to just do their job and nothing more and that's why I like them. Simple, straight-forward, strong.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Problem resolved, it was the crappy cable that Fender supplies with the EJ Strat.

Replaced it with a Dimarzio cable and no more radio frequency. There is a very low hiss but what you would typically expect with single coils.
