I have just completed my version of a black strat project. (MIM on a budget)

http://s80.photobucket.com/albums/j186/ ... =slideshow

I started with a 2008 Fender Roadhouse Stratocaster Deluxe Series (MIM) Black in mint condition.

I chose this MIM model as it has a better finished neck and has the right tint as well for the Gilmore Strat look.
The Fender MIM Roadhouse has very good build specs and end user reviews so its a good budget base to start from.

Specs of the base components.

Black Alder Body
Neck: Maple, Modern “C” Shape,Satin Urethane Finish, Tinted Neck,9.5” Radius
21 Medium Jumbo Frets
Fender®/Ping® Standard Cast/Sealed Tuning Machines
Bridge Vintage Style Synchronized Tremolo

David Gilmore Black Strat components

Black 11-hole 1-ply pickguard.
White pickup covers, knobs, and switch button.
3 250K Split Shaft CTS pots
Sprague Orange Drop Capacitor
5-way switch
Vintage style push back wire
Vintage style (F) neck plate
Seymour Duncan SSL-5 bridge pickup
Fender Custom Shop '69 Strat middle pickup
Fender Custom Shop Fat '50s Strat neck pickup
Mini Toggle switch to add the neck pickup to the output signal no matter where the 5-way switch is. (7-way feature)

This one is a keeper...

Looks nice man. I take it that it was more a tribute inspired by Gilmour's than a replica project?

Yes , a tribute inspired by Gilmour guitar only... a replica it is not, ....at least in this version.
maybe project number 2 next version possibly :-)

I like that. That switching sounds very cool. Nice job.

I hate to say it but, whatever you read, was wrong. He uses it quite a lot to select the neck and bridge simultaneously. That strat has undergone some serious modifications since he bought it in 1970, so trust me when I say, if he didn't use it, it wouldn't be there.

I have a CS Gilmour NOS strat, and that pickup selection is pure floyd tone all day long!
