Dunlop Red Jazz III, and when I can find them Jazz I. The I's have a duller point making it easier to pinch. The III has a sharp point.

I had been using light picks until I read an article in GuitarOne mag about the Jazz III, entitled "Will This Pick Make You a Better Player?" It went on to interview users of the pick and why they liked it. The pick comes in red and black - the black being stiffer and apparently preferred by metal players. When I read that Joe Bonamassa prefers the red ones I stopped in at GC and picked some up just to try.

I'd tried heavy gauge picks before and didn't like them, they didn't feel right in my hand. As soon as as I put the Jazz III in my hand it felt natural and I found that I could do things with my strings that I'd fumbled around with before. Could've been psychological, but whatever. I'm never going back to anything other than the Dunlop Jazz picks.

My sister gave me a Jazz I a little while ago - said she didn't like it - I did, but can't find it in any music store. I may need to try getting some direct from Dunlop.

as far as being durable and smooth, i have to agree with the dunlop tortex. however, i really just go for cheap picks with cool designs on them. give me skulls, aliens, playboy bunnies, crosses.... stuff like that. i dont care if i burn through a pick in one night, they cost like 15 cents. might as well have some fun with them.

That's just too much variability for me. ;) Part of the way I play is, I guess, comfort-zone. Changing picks means changing your picking style slightly to compensate.

For instance, I could never like those sharpie picks - like the Dunlop Jazz III (unfortunately). Don't know what it is - maybe I like some meat (of the pick) hitting the strings or it causes too many misses for my style (metal, neo-classical, er, fast). Every time that I try picks with the points like that, I go back. Also can't stand the really small picks - and I have small fingers. But unless your 'grip' is directly thumb-index tip-to-tip, these things are hard to handle and unstable at speed. Picks a flyin' everywhere... :) I grip the pick with the meat of my thumb and side of index.

If you look in "The Guitar Handbook" (mine is 1982!), there are those same styles of plectrum you see today. Also noted there,

"Hard picks produce more volume and a firmer tone. They also offer better control at high speed..."

For me, that says it all. My style works well for the stone plectrum. I do have some 1.14 Ultex Dunlops just for spares and working with steel-string acoustic strummin'.

It all depends, I suppose. I've been known to use a nickel or quarter on an acoustic when, at the time, no picks were to be found nearby. Won't do Satch (but I'll bet Satch could somehow) with that but you can get by. I'll have to take a quarter with me when he shows up at GC in April.

I use Jim Dunlop .73mm nylon picks. They're hard enough for playing solo and flexible enough for strumming. Just right for both.

I use the Dunlop Tortex .60 mm. ones. They feel good, last a while, and more importantly, they don't break. I bought a pack of celluloid picks once, I went through 6 picks in one hour. The tips kept snapping off while I was playing.

You must be aggressive! I've broken picks, but not in one session.

Dunlop 1.14's mostly, or Fender 351 heavies, and then drill a couple holes in the top for grip.

I just picked up some black ones called 'Ultra COOL' 1.0's because they have the tacky little bumps and they are easier to hold in my big mitt, also a no-name gray 1.0 with a bumpy texture for grip and they both feel great.

What is your current favorite pick to use with your strat?

I really like the Herco Gold Nylon Flex 50.

I like heavy picks, presently the Pearloid Celluloid pics which match the pickguard of my Am Dlx Strat.
