What you wanted was a multieffects unit with NO amplifier modeling (the Boss ME-50 is one of the few units that doesn't). What you GOT is an amp modeler with a current starved 12AX7 in the front end and some effects behind.

If you wanted an ME-50, I'd return it for a credit and wait until the Boss came in.

Any effects or modeling unit that has a single 12ax7 in the front end is going to produce nothing more than an approximation of pre-amp distortion, whihc sounds pretty bad... nothing like real power tube distortion, which is the sound everybody is going for. I think of them as "marketing tubes."

On the other hand, a Twin Reverb won't break up like that until you reach volumes that require an FAA permit.

What kind of sound/music are you going for?

No, I like the ME-50, but I'm not a fan of any distortion-in-a-box: i think a Tube Screamer sounds pretty nasty, actually, and I don't use my ME-50 for drive.... I use the mod and delay effects, the expression pedal (whihc works real well), and some of the reverbs.

I feel the same way, but I've actually got to where I use some of the distortions on my ME-50. I dial up some nice fat overdrive on my amp and then push it with the pedal. Distortion from the pedal to the amp cleean is decent, but nothing like the natural tube amp distortion with jsut a bit of a push.

Might sound like overkill, but give it a shot and see what you think.

I think that simple one or two function stomp boxes work best with a valve amp like a Fender Twin. I'll use the modeling everything-in-one boxes with modeling amps.
