I've been playing acoustic for about 14 months and am looking to buy my first electric. The front running choice is naturally a strat, but I am wondering: for a first electric guitar, should I get a Mexican made one or American. I play literally everyday and love everything about guitar so there is no fear of me buying it and then getting bored after a few months and having to sell it or something like that.
Thanks a lot for all your help.

both should most likely suit your needs for playing.... if you are going to go with a mexican, look into something like the deluxe players stratocaster, it is a very versatile guitar for a reasonable price.... i think the mexican made ones are fine instruments, but play all you can in your price range

if you can afford an american or highway 1, try those, but make sure you not only get a guitar, but a good amp as well.. i would rather play a good mexican made instrument and put the few hundred saved in a great amp because a majority of the tone will be coming from it, not the guitar

If you go for the American, you won't think to yourself (damn, I could got the USA Model) and this way, if you feel you spent too much on it, you can sell it and get enough for a mexican and then some.

Hello Kibbs58,

Mexico guitars are good, I've owned two standards over the years.
They served me well, if I find a right one I'll get another.
The deluxe player strat is a really nice guitar.
The highway one{USA made} is another great choice,
in the same price arena.

Best of luck.

anytime... my best advice is to find a good amp first that you know will suit you (unless you have one) because the amp is where the tone will come from.... then, take the amp from your budget, and whatever you have remaining, play as many guitars in that price range as you can.... you may find an american is the best fit for you, you may find a mexican will suit your needs.. its really all preference of the player, so make sure you get a combo you are satisfied with

If you can afford a good amp, and a great guitar, then I definitely think you should purchase either the American Standard Strat, or the Highway One Strat (it's a little cheaper). Mexican strats are not bad but if you believe that you will commit to your guitar playing than I suggest you go for American Strats. Once you get a little more experienced you will most probably end up selling the Mexican Strat to buy yourself an American. So, the American can make you save money in the long run, and has greater tone and overall feel than the mim Strat. But if you are positive that you can't afford it, go for the Mexican. Oh and I reccomend that you get either a roland cube-30, blues jr, or Super Champ XD as your first amp. Good luck!

How much would you suggest for me to pay for a good quality first amp?

If you're getting a strat, you've gotta go tube. Avoid solid state amps like the plague.

Look at the Fender Blues Jr. I swear by it. I don't know where you are or what your budget is, but in the UK I picked mine up for £400, which is about $800... roughly. With the Blues Jr, the amount of amp you're getting for that price and size is just insane. It's definitley more than loud enough to tick off the neighbours. And the tone is outrageous. 'As pure as an infant's first tear' is how I have come to describe it. :)

it really depends on what you're looking for... if it is just a practice type amp, 30 or under watts would suit you fine.... if you want to do any kind of gigs with it, i'd recommend about 65 or higher, or a combo of some sort.... look into some tube amps, possibly vox

Please!
At any cost, buy American. Not only to help preserve jobs here, but also I have guitars from 1967 and earlier that play and sound like new. I have a japanese built guitar that's about ten years old that won't stay in tune, can't keep the truss rod adjusted right, pots crack and have dead spots.
The American made Fenders and Gibsons just never say die. In the long run you'll get what you pay for.

Just go all out, american deluxe or if you just cant part with the idea of AlNiCo pickups the vintage hot rod 62 strat and get a blues deluxe or any other pure tube amp anything else means you are buying a guitar you will outgrow and that is money down the toilet, even if you sell it you cant get everything back.

I'll agree with also buying a good amp like a Blues Junior.
The Mexican Classic Series are very well build, avoid the Mex Standards.
The Classic Player (MIM) or American Series guitars are fine too.

If you can afford it or can wait till you've saved enough, get a USA model. I searched high and low between all of the models at my disposal and took out a small loan to buy my American Deluxe Stratocaster because the quality was worth the debt. It is such a work of art and a joy to play that I have a hard time putting it down. From the moment I wake up until it's time to go to work I play through my amp to practice my songs. After work till I fall asleep with my guitar strapped to me I am playing scales, modes, and various techniques to hone my skills through headphones till the wee hours of the morning.

My .02... Get the Jimmy Vaughn Artist strat. you won't break the bank, loads of vibe, easy to turn if you're dissatisfied and nothing but rave reviews from all that own and use her!
