Forgive me if the answer to this is obvious - I looked at many pages and as a neophyte wiring diagram reader, I did not find detailed instructions.
I have a 2006 MIM Standard Fat Strat with the Fender humbucker. I would like to have the humbucker be controlled by a tone control. But, I also want to retain tone control for the neck and middle pickups. I understand how that is done simply with a jumper on a SSS Standard Strat. I found Fender's 2000 wiring diagram for a MIM Fat Strat (below). Would one put a jumper between lugs 1 and 2 on the 5-way switch in the diagram to have the neck pickup controlled by Tone 1, and the middle and humbucker controlled by Tone 2? Or is it more complicated than that? Note that I am flexible in which pickups are controlled by which tone control - having neck and middle controlled by Tone 1 and the humbucker by Tone 2 would also be fine.
Thanks

Hi yeastor,

In this case you can not add a jumper for tone control as with a Standard setup, because the pups are connected to the same side of the selector switch as the tone controls, so the pups would also be connected together if a jumper is used. Someone here can probably provide a wiring diagram for what you want, hang out for a minute and see.

Welcome.

Half of your pickup selector switch is tied up with shorting out one of the humbucker's coils when you team it with the middle pickup. If you choose to not have one of the humbucker's coils shorted out when teamed with the middle pickup, you can use your current pickup selector switch. Otherwise, you'll either have to use a Superswitch for your pickup selector switch or an on/off switch to manual kill that humbucker's coil. The proverbial "ball is in your court".

OK, thanks. I understand that in concept. How would you rewire the current pickup selector switch in that scenario?

Is an easier alternative to wire Neck + Middle pickups to Tone 1 and have the HB on Tone 2? Would that solve the HB coil issue you raised? [Sorry, I follow the wires in the diagrams, but don't yet understand all the circuit operations.]

Please annotate my diagram for anything you think might work.

You're welcome.

Yes to your first question. I'm not sure what you're asking with the second.

Again, to use your current switch, killing one of the HB's coils in position #2 would no longer be doable. If you notice with your present wiring, the HB's white and black wires are soldered together at the switch to a terminal. These wires would have to be unsoldered from that terminal but remain soldered together and taped off. This will retain both coils to work at all times. Or, you could take these two wires and ground them to the back of the volume pot. This will permanently allow only one coil to work. You'll see in the diagram below where wiring the tone pots in the configuration you are contemplating, cannot be. This would be the diagram you would use with one modification. The diagram:

The mod: See the unused terminal on the top of the selector switch, second from the right? Solder a jumper wire from that terminal to the one directly to the left of it.
