Mexican standard stratocaster would be a good bet.

A Squier Classic Vibe Series guitar or bass. My pick would be the 50's strat.

If you don't need a new guit... I picked up my American Special Stratocaster on Craigslist for $500. Ton o' good deals out there. This economy has definitely made it a buyer's market.

If you dig around I have seen USA standards at GC for $500. Also CL has them for $500 if you are willing to to wait. Also a used Jimmie Vaughan is a killer guitar.

I'd look for a nice used MIM and then upgrade the tuners, electronics, or pickups to taste... you should be able to keep it under $500... just a thought

First you need to decide Bass or Guitar, then you go to a music shop not Guitar center type a place but a shop with some knowledgeable people and try a few and see what you are comfortable with. Mom an Pop shops can work with you on price most times and will set it up correctly for you. There is nothing worst then a beginner trying to learn on a improperly setup guitar because it will add to the difficulty.

Another vote for a Jimmy Vaughn. I like the v-shaped necks, and these are almost always really nice guitars with a vintage vibe.... hard to beat for the price.

Honestly, i think looking for a used MIM strat is your best bet. With the extra leftover, you can upgrade it how you see fit. May not be a American Std. or deluxe strat, but it would be something thats your own taste so to speak
