agreed.... I play 11's on an american std 2002 and I've never touched the 3 springs it came with . Just tightened the claw a bit and I was good to go. No I don't dive bomb or anything I just use the trem for a little vibrato. but I've never really had much trouble when I do actually use the trem. I do bend alot. .. I mean a lot and 3 springs seem to work fine for me.

I use 5 springs and the springclaw is tightened touching the body.

My very basic answer. If you move up to 10s you'll need to tighten the trem claw a tad, and possibly touch up string height and intonation.
