Just got a 1990 AM sunburst HSS strat w/ SD pups all around. Playing it through a Hot Rod Deluxe. The tone seems a little thin, at least not as full as I expected. Is it as simple as going to bigger strings? I've been playing an LP so I may just be used to the fatter sounds. Love the way the strat feels and plays.

You can try thicker gauge strings. If that doesn't beef up the tone enough, consider different pickups and electronics.

I hate to say this, but no Strat will sound like a Les Paul. It comes down to differences in construction.

Thanks. Knew I was getting a different sound than the LP, just would like it to be a little fuller. I'll try the strings first.

Hi Nipsy, welcome to the Forum.

What you're hearing here is basically just the difference between humbuckers and single coil pickups. SCs can often sound thin for moment after 'buckers simply because they tend to have lower output. But keeping the volume on the LP a touch lower and boosting it on the Strat usually is all that's needed. Other than that, the contrast in core tone is kinda most of the point of the difference between a Strat and a Paul.

And after all, that amp exists to have a Strat played through it! My suggestion, put down the LP for a while, concentrate on the Strat and learn to love its sounds. There's no right or wrong, but having both at your fingertips is a pretty good thing! 8)

Enjoy - C
