Hi there!

The finish of my fender Strat Plus 1997-1998 is chipping off at the joint between the maple and the "skunk stripe". It has only occurred behind the 3rd to 7th fret of the stripe. So far its has not protuded, but I can feel it if I run my fingers over it.
However, the truss rod is currently still adjustable and the neck is straight.

1) Is this a common problem for strats?
2) What are the common causes?
2) Does this imply a malfunction of the truss rod or are there any causes for concern ?
3) Will fender warrant a repair since it was bought some time ago, back in 1999?

Appreciate any advise.

Thank you!
Ritz

Was this guitar in the cold and then pulled out of the case in a warm environment? That is a common cause of finish problems, as the wood expands at a different rate than the finish.

I have had no issues with my 1991 Strat Ultra, which is a variant of the plus series, with a 'dually ' humbucker Lace Sensor in the bridge position, akin to a HSS type of Strat. I hear that Gibson custom shop is good with repairs, and will repair any guitar. You may lose some vintage value, but it is up to you. I don't know if Fender Custom Shop will do the same repair, but the guitar is not under a warranty.
