Well, I have a chance to buy an '89 American Standard....it's in pretty good shape overall and has the original case, hang tag etc. No paperwork though...guy couldn't find it. Am I allowed to ask if it's a good deal at 8 hundred?

Cheers,

If you want an older guitar or your looking for a specific sound for that money then go for it. Honestly, you can get a new American Strat for a few dollars more and I would rather get a new Strat for 1000 than an older one for 800. But thats me..

Thanks JPD, I noticed I can buy an American HSS with lots of goodies for 9 something. It crossed my mind that the '89 American Standard might have risen in value though, so I thought I'd better ask before it gets away.

Cheers,

Your right about the older guitar possibly having value now. I guess it depends on what your looking for. Good luck with your decision and I`m sure you`ll make the right move.

Maybe I should look around on the bay for that year/model and see what they're going for ! But still, I've decided to go with something new for my first Strat.

Ebay can be tricky, I bought a knock off strat and sold it one month later because the frets weren`t filed down and my hand was getting like chopped meat. Try to buy something you can look at in person or make sure the seller on ebay gives you the right info. Once you buy it from ebay theres no returns and if something is wrong its too late and your stuck with it. You can also try craigslist.com and look at items in your own state. That way if you see something you can look at it before you buy it. I`ve seen some nice strats there. You may want to check it out. I`ve even seen new ones not used.

Yes, you've got that right JPD, but then anything sight unseen can be tricky....like you say in so many words, something may look like something but it may not be something...and I've learned in a short time that anybody with a screwdriver can build a strat facsimile...now don't anyone take me wrong because I've also seen some beautiful owner built strats that I'm thinking would take a well trained eye to determine they aren't factory built....and there has to be some satisfaction knowing you assembled your own guitar, especially if it turns out well and sounds how one wants it to.

Funny you should mention craigslist JPD, that's exactly where I found the strat in question. I'm still in touch with that person and may have a look at it yet...if he lowers the price that is....since I can buy something much nicer for a couple hundred more with hardcase, all the goodies and a warranty. Why not, right?

Cheers,

Some people would rather buy an older beat up guitar with the hopes of it having some vintage value already. But I keep my guitars polished and in the best condition I can. I have a `63 Gretsch my father got me new, and I inherited my brother`s `69 Gibson Les Paul. Both shine. My new Strat is going to be kept that way also. If you buy your strat new at least you get the warranty, new case and you know where the guitar has been. Buying someone elses leaves some questions about how its been taken care of. Over time a new Strat will gain its value also.

That's pretty much the way I am JPD, I take care of things and I don 't really want them to get beat up. Leftover from my childhood I suppose...one guitar for 4 kids. Wish I had that one back !

Some of my thinking on getting the '89 had to do with that if it din't cover everything I wanted in my first Strat, maybe I could sell it for what I paid for it and then head in the 'new Strat' direction.

Thanks Stratoholic, just the kinds of opinions I'm looking for. Again I'm leaning more towards a new Strat...warranty being a big player there.

If you like Stratocaster1989, I could ask if the '89 is still for sale and also ask if I can get the guy's email address to you. '07 for 850, was that new or used if I might ask?

Cheers,

I would go for the 89 - a good period around that time. And i know a lot of people think it is bull$hit about older wood, bit I believe guitars just sound better and better as the wood ages. All guitars need about 4 to7 years of ageing.
