The DRRI sounds great w/both my Les Paul & Strat. Also for all the older genres, blues, jazz, classic rock, r&b. So I would say it's a safe bet that it would go well w/your big apple.

Thanks for the replies. I am playing in church. I really want a good clean tone. I need a little crunch, but not a lot- well maybe for playing at home. I will also need to use the amp at home for practicing, but also for at home for doing my own thing. I need to be able to run through the church PA without a mic. I like the AC 30 sound. I really like the tremolo feature. What I also like about the tube amps is that you can play clean and get it to break up with more pick attack. My concern with all-tube is not being able to use at bedroom levels. The Fenders I have heard so far sound a bit trebly to me. I am considering a modeling amp. They are better than they used to be. Someone told me that an AC 30 will take a Strat better and an AC 15 will take a Tele better- that is what prompted me to ask my original question. I really don't want to spend more than $550 but may go to $800 if I really feel like it would make me happy with my purchase.

Try one of the Mustang Series amps...I've been a tube snob for about 12 years now, and the Mustang I is the first solid state amp I bought, because I downright loved it the second I tried it in the store. You can spring for a little more and get a Mustang II (I'd recommend it...more wattage) or you can up the ante to a Mustang III. These amps have plenty of volume, and sounds good at bedroom volumes (which is why I bought mine in the first place).

If you plan on spending 800, look at the Fender SuperSonic 22. Definetly ticks all the boxes you mentioned you were looking for. I see them used all the time for $700.

For 800, you can get a Mustang and something like a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe.

Ok if that's your brief that gives us a better idea.

I have heard good things about the super champ xd ? is that it, the 15 watt with the modeling front end and 6v6 in push pull out. It should tick all your boxes and they have been on sale for $200 lately. You SHOULD be able to quieten it down for home and if it's not loud enough at your church a more sensitive speaker should sort it. Re biasing it works wonders also apparently. I've not used one but a friend in the US who's another long time amp fiddler reckons they are the bees knees. Possibly worth a try ?

I can't see how a strat would sound better through an ac30 and a tele through an ac15. Depending on the era they generally had either a pair of 6bq5/el84 or a quad of them, so essentially the same output section but doubled. The 30 had a more complex preamp as I recall. I recall some of the "reissues" were pretty rubbish, but I haven't looked at them in years so can't comment on recent ones.

2c.

I am sure others will offer useful thoughts. Good luck.

I personally love my '57 Tweed Deluxe clone "5E3". It cost me about $600, but I had to hand wire and build the thing, which was a great learning experience. Plus I know all the parts are the best pieces I could have possibly got my hands on. Best clean and mild overdriven tone I've ever had in an amp. Plenty loud for any gig and gets low enough for home volumes. If I need it any louder than my 18 watt tube amp can pump out, it gets mic'd. For distortion I use a MI Audio Crunch box for that Marshall type of distortion.

Blackstar amps. A great combination, I'm impressed everytime I plug a Strat into one. So far, it hasn't mattered which model Blackstar, but that's just me.
