ABH..How are ya..!!!

I have not worked with danish oil, or at least on such a limited basis that I'm not at all confident in the results...It would be an option but I think I will keep it for the next body build as at this point I'm having enough challenges cropping up as the milling and final stages take place..
Nothing problematical but just a few things to keep in mind, sort of I'm on step # 15 but thinking about step # 20 and the process so as not to have to backtrack, which often means a wasted piece of lumber..... :?

Truth is I had put these projects on temporary hold, (1) I just didn't have the time to do it ...(2) The amount of detail work means that patience is key and skipping steps results in a botched result....
Let's face it I will be playing these for a long time so any mistakes will be evident every time I pick up either guitar.....

But as they say it's all water under the bridge.....

So quite a bit of work has been done today and I have to pause and glue up the Stratopartster top and bottom halves.... 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

OK...Stratopartster IV is glued and clamped but I'll back track to what took place today..
Pics included bien sur..

Image

That was as the day began, Tele. I top ready, Strato. IV tops and backs ready for final prep to assembly.
Ist.... the Back/Bottom needed to be sanded perfectly flat, so back and forth with the belt sander than the orbital sander.

Image

Back/Bottom glue side done and on to the back's side which will be viewed when played..
This is just a smoothing out to remove glue marks and inspect the joint to see if a major separation, recutting then re-glueing is needed.

Image

As can be seen, the joint came out really nice, tight with hardly a sign of a joining and absolutely no glue line... ( Where's that high Five emo. )

Image

I even had an inspector... In the last couple of days of milling outside, the bee's have been occasionally investigating and It seems they like the Walnut and Maple sawdust..

Image

Same procedures for the Top Halves, and they also came out perfect joint wise...I guess those years in the school's wood shop helped...

Image

Next was a bit of a detour, as can be seen, sanding the tops and bottoms completely removed my rough outlines and I have been in need of a clear template for a while just hadn't gotten around to it....
This is just a rough template, it is 3/4 of an inch larger than the actual outline of a Stratocaster is. This purely because in a rough outline you want to cut larger than final size.
Wood chips and sometimes accidents happen so a bit of leeway for the rough and tumble of shaping is preferred..

This template only took about 15 minutes to make so a quick but valuable tool for this and future builds...It's just a sheet of 3/16th Lexan, I had to cut it in two pieces as my sheet was not big enough for the complete Stratopartster outline.

Image
Image

I first cut it on the bandsaw then just did it outside with the jigsaw with a specialty blade for plastics, then just file the edgeand then sand smooth.. The two halves are joined with Painters tape and that is it..Perhaps I'll glue them sometime in the future..

Image

I didn't notice until now the reflection of the clouds in the Lexan...
This is what the result is , the clear Lexan allows me to see my registration marks as well as line up the contour fore and aft according to where the best
figuring is (registering is a woodworkers/cabinet makers term for reference marks on a project )

Image

Also a couple steps have occurred here.. I needed to cut both the top Halves and the Back Halves to the same size while emphasizing the best figuring for both.
While also lining up the center joint mark to both Halves...Notice I have the boards labeled as to which face is top and which face is to be glued...Don't laugh, it has happened that I have glued up the incorrect side, not on these builds but on other projects...

The next pic is a bit odd but concerns the detail of how the top halves are going to line up, but most importantly... How will the Stratopartster outline line up from front to back... :?:

Image

I drew lines to the edge of the board for the top of the larger Upper Horn, the lower horn and the bottom of the outline.
The center line cannot be moved other than fore and aft so that is easy.
But these reference/registering marks now allow to line up the two halves perfectly ( well almost it is wood after all..)

Image

The line carries over the edge and will line up with tthe same top horn line from the Back Bottom Halves....

Image

Here are the Top Halves and the Bottom/Back halves side by side ready for ......
We'll there was much more sanding to be done....

Image

The two Halves did not line up flat with each other, I had a couple of high spots in the center and on the mid point of one corner of the halves..( :? )
The pencil squiggles ( below pic ) highlight where to sand, once they are sanded off, I check the board again with the framing square to see if more sanding is needed, and so on and so forth until perfect..

Image

This was the final phase for both Tops and Backs prior to setting up for glueing...

I finally decided that this Stratopartster would have a Walnut Center Strip, then after checking for thickness overall decided it would not work out, the body would look/be too thick @ 2-1/8"
So next time, I think I will only use 2"+ thick baulk for the next Stratopartster body build.
That is unless I decide to run a center strip.....Digressing aside...

The Top and Back Halves laid out on the bench ready for glueing up..

Image

Glue side Bottom/Back Half....

Image

Glue side Top/Front Half

Image

I'm using Titebond II for glueing, it gives about five minutes of play before it begins to set, so especially here where the halves have to match exactly when clamped, it took a bit of time to line them up, clamp lightly, adjust, add more clamps, line up, an dthe process took at least 15 minutes....Once the two halves are joined, the glue does not set as fast since it is no longer in open air..

Image

The clamps also have to be tightened periodically for about an hour until the air and extra glue is squeezed out and the boards gently align themselves flat with each other.

Image

The joints have closed up well, the edges I'm not concerned about since the actual outline is more inwards.... Even though it looks like a vertical gap at the joint line, it is actually a Sharpie line as it was difficult to see the joint line when lining both halves together...

Image

Image

I used some angle bars to add clamping pressure to the center of the boards..
This is it for this phase, it will probably take the better part of two to three days to cure so next is back to the other project....(s)

Thank You, most appreciated. The reasoning behind the sometimes long detailed explanation is for those Forum peeps who are not familiar with woodworking techniques.
Even for us in the trades it is sometimes missed details when looking at a photo of a project. for instance, this the last house I currently and completely repaired/remodeled ( a 3+ year project.)
I need to upload a couple pics...

Current...still more work to be completed..

Image
Image

Before .... 1st phase had already begun as the entire house was dark brown and grade was at the bottom of the 1st course of siding....TLC was long overdue..

Here's the link to see more of which I still need to upload for a website.

The question Today is.....Suspense.....

Are the Stratopartster top and bottoms ready to be unclamped....
To be cut on the bandsaw for final shape and to start laying out the configuration of pickups, electronics, rear mount cavities and etc...etc...

This is making me smile as One is about to go into final phase of completion.... :D

Mr Big Hair, I'm at a loss....If you go to my Stratopartster II and III build you can see my explanation of / and my failure to wire up so that everything is working accordingly....NOT
I may need a new schematic or perhaps a suggestion on simplifying the layout

Thanks

Update time.....
So after a couple days of rain, heavy at times, at which time it is never a good time to unclamp pieces of wood until the weather returns to a dry day. Mostly because of the high humidity during rain days, the unclamped wood would absorb a lot of moisture from the surrounding air with a humidity content. Not good if the boards are to remain flat..

So the body blank is unclamped and these are the results.

Image

Image

Nothing like a square peg in a round hole...

As can be noticed from these pics I decided to flip the guitar or in other words, what was once the Front/Top is now the Back/Bottom. I felt that the figuring was better suited as the top when most of the grain runs parallel.

Image

Image

Next was to figure out the body layout.... :?: :?
I'm referring to Contours, Waist Cuts and Body Thickness. I have actually 3 to choose from.
(1) the Black Strat which is actually a Standard body
(2) the Candy Red Strat which is a Squier
(3) the old J.B. Player white body..
Funnily the white body contour is the shape I have always felt most comfortable with, as it has
a deep tummy cut, deep forearm cut and the thickness and body dimension make it the nicest fitting in the tweed case.... It matches most closely the CS 56 NOS Stratocaster.

Image

This was the best way to get a comparison on the differences.

Image

Bottom horns the least important feature since sitting or standing it really doesn't get in the way..

Image

Not as pronounced as the black body but on the white body it is a more comfortable contour.

Image

Tail-end, back view so it is fairly similar from this point.

Image

It really is all about contour and which fits you best...

Image

Thickness, at the waist midpoint is the spot which to me fails a body if, it is wrong or not enough. ( No I don't rock a beer belly, I still wear a 34 waist pant... )

Image

Image

Image

Next is to trace out the body contour from the template ( closer tolerance on this one as it is accurate as far as body dimensions, not the Lexan template but one made of MDF..

I got more done today than I anticipated....
First was to cut the Template for actual size.. made from MDF ( medium density fiberboard ) it was fairly easy to cut and first trace out.
I traced it out from the white Strat body with just a pencil and a combo square...

Image

Then cut to size, edges smoothed off with a file than sandpaper and I now have a template which should last for quite some time....A word of caution to those following and wanting to build their own bodies....MDF is hazardous to your lungs when cut and especially sanded....So wear a mask at the very least...If not a respirator with Hepa filters..

Image

Next was to draw the pattern out on the blank. Then to cut the blank on the bandsaw...

Image

Here it is cut to rough outline...

Image

At first when I glued and released the body from the clamps, I was concerned with the glue line in the center and wether or not all of the seam had closed as intended...This concern was from the edges not being tight.....

Image

But the joint is tight and smooth with no evidence of separation.

Image

Image

An unintended result was the top edge figuring came out as if I had planned it.
I Just got lucky so I'm exited as to what it will look like once finished..
This definitely calls for an Aged Cherry Burst or Tobacco Burst finish.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Next up will be measuring for the hardware and making up the templates for routing out for pickups and term and electronics cavity....To keep most of the wood highlighted this will be a back loaded fro electronics and only a Master Tone and master Volume, 5 way or a super switch and probably Texas Specials or 69's... I'm still not decided on hardware, I do know this will be an SSS set up other than that, the Telepartster I will dictate the layout.

Still quite a bit of figuring on this and I will return to the other projects tomorrow, one being prepping the Walnut Telepartster body for glueing....
