Mr. The Nutter...How are you :?:

I just prefered the way the grain laid out with the sap run in the center.
When I ran the halves at Luzio's shop on the joiner. ( actually he did it since it is his cabinet maker's shop ) and I was not about to argue and ask to allow me to work a $12,000 jointer..
Talk about a dream shop set-up , being a cabinet maker with most of his clientele in East Hampton it is quite impressive. I will have him run the other pieces as soon as possible since he can do it with much more ease than I can.
Plus we all know our own personal tools and their idiosyncracies.

This will be a carved top with an edge binding, ( possibly triple ) still have not decided on what to use for edge binding from LMI. The top and the back will both have an edge binding and the joint for the top and back of the body will also be hidden by an edge bind.
Choices at the moment are between Maple with a rosewood laminate for the center and Flame Maple for the top edge and a dark wood for the back edge.
This other than the top edge will not be finally decided until the 4 halves have been glued up and cut to shape. It will depend on how the joints dissapear.

At this time the Walnut top halves for this Tele and the Maple top halves for the Strat are clamped flat awaiting to be glued up. I had thought I would have the time over the weekend but that was not the case... Last the neck is a Maple neck and I liked the continuation of a light strip from the neck joint to the body, on thru the tail. It's visual...
No gold knobs BTW....

Cheers

Nice touch! Didn't think of the neck at first...

The stripe being approximately the same width of the Maple Neck will really stand out!

Cheers, I'm hoping there will be a return of this thread in the big headlines soon - any update yet?

Hey there... :)
Not quite yet....but just found the list I wrote when I started this project...
I wrote it for the simple reason that I knew sooner or later I would go off track in the planning stages...Luckily the changes have been minor, Grover Deluxe tuners instead of Gotoh's mini Delta's, and the body is all going to be Walnut, I will do an edge wood binding with either a Maple with a rosewood lam or just a strong flame maple ( from LMI )
Definitely going with a N/NM/NB/M/MB switching configuration, I rediscovered a website called the Guitarnuts... :?: ttp://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/stratlovers.php
Very nice and clever switching options for Strats, I urge anyone to look thru this website before plunking down hundreds of dollars on overpricely boutique pickups...
I ordered TexasSpecials for this but they are Fender and as much as possible I want to keep it as a Fender based Telepartster.
Not to mention I don't have these in any other Strat.

So at the moment the halves are in the basement workbench awaiting glueing and they are clamped tight to eliminate movement ( I also locked the door ) If I have the energy as I'm about to go on a 2 to 3 hour training ride I will look into unclamping and glueing.
Also My Kitchen table has Stratopartster II's pick guard awaiting surgery. So this is today's project and will be updated on the proper site....

BTW...Did you see I bumped up your thread of build compilation to the Lounge in the hopes of generating interest.... 8) And also to hopefully get Newbies to do some research on their own

Let's try editing and adding text once again.....

Once again since I was unable to post this earlier....

It is about time to begin the 1st steps to the Telepartster Layout..
Recapping .. I cleaned out the basement shop today , adding two additional tables/benches for use of the Drill Press, Band Saw, Planer and various power tools, The other table is left for hand tools and this freed up the Craftsman work table

Next I began laying out the templates from a sheet of 2'x4' MDF...This gave me 8 templates.
5 for various pup combo's ..SSS..SHS..HH...HSS...HSH and 3 for body contours....Strat..Tele and a Hybrid...

Once measured to fit the glued up blanks, they will be used to register the contours on the blanks which will be uncontoured with center marks intact...

The following pics give an idea but more to follow later...

Image

This Below is the Pup layout for the Telepartster...All backloaded, no pick guard, so routing out this template will have to be uber-exact...

Bumping Like things in the Night...

So to recap or move forward...finally, I have not acquired a 13" DeWalt Planer as I have not found one on Craig's list yet, but that is OK as we will proceed the old fashioned way with Block planes of various sizes....Used to work for Luthiers, so modern luxuries not withstanding.....
Just the (1) Jason Statham Rule....Sharp Tools ..

So set up the Bosch Miter and Table Saw in the drive way with the Quattro Estate lurking behind ready for a quick get away...

Image

Next was to lay out the Stratopartster IV Top Halves for recutting and prepping for gluing up.

Image

Problem here is that the edges have shifted thereby not allowing for a tight almost invisible seam once glued.
Image
Image

Simple remedy was to recut both edges on both tops.....First the outside edges as I needed a square straight edge to run my halve thru for trimming the inside edges or bonding edges.

This was after trimming the edges but prior to setting up the gluing phase. Even though my edge was trimmed successfully I still needed to lightly block sand the bonding edges, (1) to roughen and raised a bit of the grain and also to remove burrs. Sounds contradictory but it's not....

Image

Before the block sanding I set up my clamps and dry clamped the two halves together. Then illuminated the back side and looked thru the front to see if light showed thru....
It did, which meant that the block sanding was needed and once done I had a tightly closed seam....

Image

Image

Now ready for gluing...I had a choice of Three wood glues..All Alyphatic glues. I chose the Tite bond II as it is yellow, will dry clear and less likely to show any signs of presence on Maple.
The Titebond III is a brownish tint which I will use with the Walnut pieces..
The third was the Elmer's which I will try out on another body but It is imperative to stay with proven materials...
One does not want to get to the point of prepping the bodies for finish only to realize that the thin glue seams are showing....FAIL..

Image

The above and below pics are of my old J.B. Player Start copy body which I use for a template ( even though I have Lexan and MDF templates made up..It is really just for 3 dimensional speccing and measurements..It matches exactly a Fender Strat body and I am not about to bounce around a nice Strat body to recheck measurements hence the J.B.

Image

Here are the two top halves all glued up.....and clamped like some medieval torture chamber.
Heavy metal fans should approve.....

Image

Next is back to the Saws as I will work on the two bottom halves and the contrasting waistband in Walnut.....

In this Update I have not started with the Telepartster I halves as the two halves have thrown a monkey wrench in the process....
Thus I chose for the path of least resistance of the first update and build continuation..
I wanted to make sure that what I was doing would work, Walnut is a bit denser than Maple but the same process will apply......
So the Halves were glued up around midnight last night ( it did take about 4 hours just for this phase ) and will sit clamped for another 24 but preferably 48 hours....

Stay Tuned...Update will be up very soon....

I seem to have a glipsch in this thread, a few weeks ago I changed the status of the Photobucket albums for the build threads from Public to Private....
I'm guessing that the move has caused many of the photo's to be labeled moved or deleted, otherwise unable to be viewed.
I just reversed the status in hoping that this will rectify the issue.. If not I will have to backtrack and painstakingly repost all the missing pics.. Yummy..

Any one have suggestions if you have had this happen... :? :?:

Edit...I just saw that on clicking post editing, the link to the pics are still present just not showing the photo, perhaps it will rectify itself in a day or two.....Bummer...

I just realized I do not have a Fender 70's style Stratocaster neck, this may take some spelunking unless someone has a suggestion and would care to PM me....Dunka... :?:

All PhotoBucket so we'll see....I just recut the maple bottom halves of the Stratopartster and now it's on to the Walnut waistband. I have some Walnut Baulks that are perfect for this as they are not nice enough for bottoms or tops but waste not...
In addition I need the extra thickness as this will be a carved top, not entirely sure as to how the final layout will be but wether I'm going to have a contrasting 3 layer sandwich strip for the back or just the mid band around the circumference....

That is the surprises of cutting up wood stock, what is revealed when you open it up dictates the layout to be.....Finishing up lunch and time to get back out there...

On to today's progress. Plan was to cut and mill to Length, Width and Thickness both the Figured Maple bottom/back halves and the center strip pieces in Walnut......
Hmmm...that was a bit too ambitious...

(1st).. Was to lay out the two bookmatched halves and see where to square up with a minimum loss of figured wood....

Image

Both halves are different thicknesses to which I'll attend to, later...But first the easiest was to square up the ends, by cutting them, now I had a reference point for squaring up each halves and all 4 sides.

Image

I next cut on the side/edge that has the knots as those edges will be the outside edges and are preferable as outside rather than inside edges...I also could lose up to 1-1/4 inches but could not on the inside edges since being bookmatched the maple figuring has to contrast evenly.

Voila.....After multiple fine cuts, the two halves are ready to be planed and sanded to thickness. :)

Image

Now the fun part....The Walnut Center Strips...

Image

Image

As is Horribly Evident...This is not the Preferred Stock, however since this will be cut square and then ripped in three halves 5"1/2 wide by 3/8th" thick, this otherwise throw away baulk can be put to good use....
This piece was twisted as well as having areas cupped and recessed....

(Ist) Was to cut the edge ( the best one or closest to square ) square...Imperative since I need a flat surface for the next cuts....

Image

With a flat edge I could now run the piece thru and cut a nice perpendicular half of the face...
I then flipped the piece, cut, spun it and cut and repeated these steps 3 to 4 times to get a square piece of wood. Each time I cut no more than a blade width, usually less.
At this point I still wasn't sure of my center strip's thickness as I didn't know how much I would need to take off to square off the baulk...

Finally here it is... Cut to rough size and ready to be planed and sanded to a nice, square and even rectangular baulk....

Image

Next phase was to run the piece thru the saw and slice it in three strips of 3/8th" by 5"1/2.
Walnut is extremely dense and I went too fast the first time and loaded the saw which popped the breaker switch.... Ran up the hill to the house and reset the switch.....

Image

An ugly duckling taking shape....... I omitted to snap a pic of the finished center strips but they are not quite up to spec and this will have to wait until tomorrow....
In the meantime.....

Image

The two bookmatched halves were prepped, first planed and then sanded flat.
All these pieces must be perfectly flat as they will all be glued up together face to face and the strongest bond is when all surfaces are flush against each other ...No pockets of air or glue resulting from an undulating face.....Hence why this does take quite a bit of time...
Did I mention Patience....

Break Time... :!: :!:

Image

The neighbor's dogs came over for a visit so it was time to throw stick in pond and fetch...
The dog....I'm not that well trained and neither it seems was his buddy...

Image

Another pic of the book matched half, once planed and fine sanded, ready for Jointing and glue prep prior to assembly....

Image

Now as the final teaser pics I'll post these....This is the contrast with the center strip in Walnut, bear in mind these are the two bottom halves so the grain figuring doesn't match when sandwiched...This is just for show and tell, tomorrow I hope to get Tops and Bottoms all registered and ready for glue set up....Which means I"ll soon have a Stratopartster Body ready for laying out pups, hardware and all ..... 8) 8)

( Edit ) All the pics that had been deleted in the 4 previous pages have been reposted, except the one's that are from other Forum Members posts like Ceri, NUtter, ABH..
I cannot replace those since I cannot edit other's posts...

It was raining earlier but I believe I can get some milling done over the next few hours... 8)
