That pair is not glued up yet, is it? Bound to say, that seems an odd way to arrange the join. You have most of the flame on the outside, where it will get cut off and lost.

This is the way it's normally done. Flame in the middle:

Anyway. We need plenty more info regarding which planing method you used. And discussion of the glue-up, please! :D

Hi Ceri....
I have some issues with those pieces, It was not a select piece and thus was not too expensive.
When I bought it I took a chance, so there are some compromises in the layout.
I agree with your point that there is some loss of figuring but it is what it is.
Another option would be to cut into 3 or 4 sections but that would misalign all the figuring and make a small defect into a large visually unappealing mess.

In defense I must insist that it is much more striking under natural light then under artificial and photo flash.
On the ends I have some checking and splitting, the end grain was left unsealed and thus the location of the body is forced to be where it is at...
I plan on returning to Downes and Reader and picking out some really nice figured Maple after these are glued and shaped. i'm actually more concerned with getting flaws and mistakes resolved this time around before purchasing expensive and very selective figured Maple..

As far as the Planing, Mark pointed out that the grain contained reverse grain pattern so checking or rip out could be an issue. ( it wasn't ).

(1) The uncut piece was run thru the joiner for a flat face.
Nice joiner, a 12" parallelogram joiner with spiral cutterhead.

(2) Then the edges were run thru to ensure a perfectly square piece.

(3) Next was run thru the 14" Table saw to split cut.
On this 8" wide piece this left a 1/2 " center to be finally cut on the Porter Bandsaw.
Porter because it is an old piece of equipment before Porter became Porter and Cable circa 1930's...

(4) Last was to run the piece thru the 20" planer. A trick here was to feed the 8" piece at an angle so that the cutting blades would cut at a severe angle thereby minimizing tearout if at all. No tear out but it did require several passes, taking less than a 32th of an inch on several passes.

Gluing up will be tricky...since once clamped there is a possibility of the pieces wanting to bow up thus opening up the glue joint on one face. I will be using several cabinet clamps, luckily I have more than enough to securely clamp the pieces to ensure a flat ( checked with a framing square ) plane and thus the tops and backs ( bottoms ) will glue up flush with no air pockets or to be more specific two continuously bound faces.

I will be working on setting up a bench specifically for glueing up the pieces with bracing preventing any movement.
Sounds complicated but it isn't, as long as the work surface is perfectly flat then that ensures a perfect bond... :? yet :?:

I will post pics as I lay it all out so that it becomes a bit clearer.

In the meantime, I have Stratopartster II to attend to today ( it's raining and my work day is on hold ) so updates will be on the Stratopartster I and II thread...

Yes it does, depending on how the light reflects it's unusual, I'll give it that. Under Lacquer and a light Cherry Burst stain it should pop right out.

Not to be cliched...

An update on the Tele Deluxe neck and the tuners which are semi-installed since I still have to fill in the previous tuners screw holes.
I'm including a contrasting 2 pics with the black Grover Kidney Bean Style tuners. These will go onto one of the other builds..... Maybee....a Stratopartster all with Black hardware or a Black hardware Tele...

I'll let you peeps try to guess and if anyone has any viable suggestions I'm always open for an idea I hadn't thought of.

So these are the Gold Grover Deluxe's, a vintage style much higher quality than the Gotoh's so in the future I will swap these in for any Gotoh's...

Image

Looking back at the first pic, It is giving me an idea of building a Mary Kaye Blonde style Carved top Tele in figured Maple.....Input..Anyone... :?:

This is the same neck that was posted earlier in this thread, the pics were taken with my G3 I-phone since the wife has the 35mm Digital Canon ( it is her's after all, a B-Day Present ) but I often absconce with it....

Gold Hardware is the set-up..

Today picked up
(1) The hard tail ( thru body string ) bridge for the Telepartster AMB
(2) The Ferrules for the strings
(3) Ordered a set of Texas Specials. After much...Too much...This or that.. The choice was made with help from my friend John the Tech @ Wakefield Music ( in RI ).

Still unsure as to the scheme of things where electronics are concerned.....
Perhaps a bit of knowledge from A-Big Hair, Sir Ceri, Xhefri will help in deciding the configuration to allow Texas Specials to fully shine....

I will post pics in a day or so of the new parts, battery is dead in the 35mm and the spare and charger are at work locked up.

Ceri's no use to you here. He'd just slap 'em in, wire 'em up vintage style and start rocking 'em, ASAP.

I've a feeling Andy, Xhefri, Martian and others are who you need to be talking to. I never cease to be amazed at the clever and worthwhile things those gentleman come up with regarding electrickery.

Cheers - C

Almost forgot to post pics of the recently acquired pieces for the Telepartster..
I'm off in awhile to Durfee's Hardware, for specing out hardware for a railing porch customer project but more importantly to the topic at hand.
I want to fasten the neck with inserts thus the neck will be secured with fine threaded bolts into an insert which is much stronger than the 4 screws commonly used...I will post pics of this as I'm sure some here have no idea what I'm referring to...

Not feeling the gold knobs on this...Hmmmm.. I believe Black Knobs will be the ticket... :?:

Hi 53! :)

May I ask why you match it this way? Wouldn't it be nice to loose that plain bit in the middle if you flipped them to the outside?

Just wonderin'! :)

Cheers
