An update.

As these two builds have been delayed, main reason is I need to get a couple of shop tools.

(1) a shop bandsaw with the capability of cutting an 8 inch wide slab ( bookmatch )

(2) a portable planer with the capability of running a 13" wide slab thru .

Those are the main reasons as to the delay.....
June, July should have things back on track..

I have a Idea.....My wife would say its my "first". Take it to your local high school and see if they can do it for you. Most high schools should have the equipment you are looking for. The shop teacher could use your project to show the kids what they can do with the equipment. They also have night class for beginner and advance woodworking. Sometime a little $$$ will help lube the wheel.... 8)

Just a thought.....

Peace...

Thanks...I just love suspense

It's not really an option, or at least one I want to consider for various reasons.
Most importantly, the Walnut is figured, was quite expensive. cutting it is not as easy as it seems, since the builds are matching bodies for both the Strat and the Tele, how you configure your cuts will reveal wether you actually have bookmatched or not.
As for the Maple it was even more expensive and equally critical to get right.

Keep in mind that I restore/renovate Colonials, Victorians, Capes for a living so the woodworking part is certainly not the issue.
It is having the correct tools for the job as well as the time to do it without time constraints.

I also have a friend ( ex cycling teammate ) less than a mile from my house who is a cabinet maker with a fully equipped shop so that is an option.
Last a former customer whose husband passed away has a fully equipped ( albeit idle ) basement/workshop and last we spoke was interested in selling some of the equipment like the bandsaw, tablesaw's, joiner and various nice tools which were very well taken care of..

At the moment i am quite busy so building new guitars is mostly on the backburner.

As it stands I count 7 projects to address.
The first builds I and II , One is to be refinished as I'm unhappy with the final paint finish, the other is undergoing pickguard changes as well as some electronic dialing in.
A precision Bass which is awaiting refinishing, a 3/4 size guitar all refinished awaiting reassembly, The two new complete builds, a mandolin I was just given which needs a complete overhaul, this I may carve out a brand new top, sides and back. Thre damage is extensive so this one will await winter.
And a Body without a neck which needs a scarfed in piece and various other changes

Did I mention work ??.... Starting a project next week on a Queen Anne Victorian, custom milled railings, new deck steps and all the necessary finish woodwork to seamlessly integrate into the existing structure.....That's all except I'm wrapping up a copper roof rebuild on another Victorian house though this one is more in the Gothic Theme....

Thanks for the idea....I would love to teach shop class as I really believe it would give so many kids an idea at the very least as to developing viable skills for their future...

Hi 53: OK, but at least let us have a look inside that piece of maple:

Image

You don't need a bandsaw for that - it looks like you were half way through handsawing it four months ago! Just open that little baby up for us to take a peek inside, if you'd be so kind. Some of us have been holding our breath so long we're scarlet in the face and about to expire of suffocation!

Incidentally. I've seen instrument makers splitting figured timber by hand using a big, heavy, sharp blade. Sometimes large pieces, for cellos. Like this (can't find a better photo at this second):

Image

That gives you the ultimate bookmatched opening because the split follows the grain. I've never done it that way myself, but then I'm just an amateur builder. You are a professional joiner: this stuff is child's play for you.

Have at it, and please show us inside that amazing looking lump of maple. :D

Cheers - C

Thanks Ceri....Go ahead shamelessly force me to show my cards....LOL

I'm definitely looking into getting it done within the next few days.
Unfortunately I was not happy with the result of sawing by hand
just not a clean cut which required quite a bit of sanding planing cleanup...

OK .........Slab is cut and planed ( rough ) just to get an idea of what I have here....
It's OK but not fantastic, however once the edges are squared and both halves are lined up, cleaned up a bit more, they should be acceptable....

I'm picky so my acceptable line may be exaggerated.....but !!

The pics were taken with an overhead light, with and without flash.
The contrast is different .
These halves are to become the Strat's top, the bottom will be Walnut unless I find an equally nice slab/baulk of maple to split and match.....
I do like the contrast of Walnut and Maple perhaps separated by a strip of either Bubinga or Ebony....

Thanks again Ceri...You really had to push me to torture myself in this project....He..He..

Have some errands to run and shall return to update on both this and the Stratopartster II pickguard/electronics redo..

Ciao...

Just for an idea as to where I'm heading in these double builds, the following pics are the inspiration.
The first two are from Fender's wallpaper downloads, the third is my latest acquisition.
An Aerodyne Strat.

As can be guessed I really like the carved top look and even more so the feel of a carved top Strat and Tele...

Hi Marc: thanks so much for the photos! :D

[Above] That way around, if you please. Flame in the middle, and with the tail end at the top of this photo, to my eye.

I'm just wondering, are you having problems getting a good center join, by any chance? I doubt it, knowing your day job, but just in case I have plenty to offer on the subject, if it would be useful.

Cheers - C

Good morning Ceri...
As for the joint it's fine I have not planed the edges I just wanted to get an idea of the figured grain layout. So it was just a quick plane the face, I used my portable Bosch 1594 planer.
It did a good job I may use it for the edges but I have a bench joiner so that will be more accurate.

On the topic of wood I have another slab/baulk of Maple sitting patiently so once I cut that up I will decide on the appropriate halves....I'm tempted to just keep both Strat and Tele as all Maple and all Walnut top and back.

I agree with you on the flame in the middle tail-end top of photo.

Bye

Stratopartster III Top Halves....Cut....Planed and laid out prior to gluing.

Image

I enlisted the help of my friend Mark Luzio today in prepping these halves. Many thanks as there were a few secrets I was not aware of concerning book-matching layout.

Final Preliminary Layout. I say preliminary because as these two halves are glued/assembled to the two bottom halves, there may be some changes as getting the most striking grain effect is key in both the top as well as the back.

Image

It was quite unsure prior to splitting as to what would reveal itself, Mark thought that it would not be exeptional but good...However, surpises do happen and the figuring inside has revealed itself to be exeptional....
The finish on this will probably be either a tobacco sunburst or a cherry sunburst..

BTW...this is a rough sketch as far as Stratopartster III shape, I have a full set of plans to go off of as far as dimensions. This is only the layout phase, measurements will be taken and marked after gluing but before cutting up to rough shape on the bandsaw.
Still pondering wether I will hide the middle joint line with a dark wood binding Rosewood perhaps or something even more striking. :?:
Initial thoughts were bubinga or bloodwood however most of these exotic woods are extremely toxic dust wise as well as being very difficult to bend without splitting, even with a steam bender.. Some of the woods actually bleed into the maple which would look like I drew a binding wth an indelible ink marker... :?

That is so awesome! It inspires me to do my own build. I'd love to have a strat with a carved and figured top!!

On to the Telepartster I Top Halves.....
Same process at Mark Luzzio's shop but this will be a bit different

Cut and Planed and ready to layout for setup.

Image

There is at this point a bit of a dilemma, as I am so tempted to just build Two Strats One in Walnut... " But ".... I believe I have enough Walnut Stock to make two other bodies. At the very least.... One other Walnut....and One other Tele..... :)
Which of course means I will have to find three Fender necks, Two rosewood fingerboard, though Ebony would be ultimately fantastic and One other Maple.
The criteria nevertheless is for all to have 1970's style headstocks. 8)

I'm sure someone is asking themselves...3 single coils on a Tele.... :?:
Shouldn't that be a Strat..... :?:
Well this is going to be a James Burton inspired set-up.

The chrome pickguard was just to draw out the pup location, there will not be pickguards on these Guit-Fiddles, all will be rear routed, hence location of pups is critical and will only allow one attempt to get it correct...
I thrive under pressure of the Guillotine...

Thanks Hollis, it is going to be a bit of time before things start falling into place as far as hardware.
I will say that for the Maple Stratopartster III all the hardware will be either Gold or Black
Whereas the Telepartster I in Walnut will receive all gold hardware.
I have already secured/bought both the bridge as well as the tuners.
I will update tuners on the Deluxe neck perhaps tonight or tomorrow.
