The body has ALOT of chambering - the thing weighs less than my strats. Could that have something to do with it?

I have confidence in the builder and the work he does. He's been at it for decades and did a great job on my Tele. Don't think see a problem there. Also sprung for a nice bridge. Just seems a little too bright and missing something on the low end.

Yes, chambering will have an effect, but my point is that with an electric bass or guitar, you can color that tone by switching electronic components, hardware and strings. But with an acoustic instrument, hardware and strings are the only changes possible.
Does the wood matter ? Yes it does but it is more in the molecular structure than the species.
Stradivarius, Guarneri violins were made with a particular species of pine ( pinus of which there are 100 species ) from a region of Italy that is unique for its properties. Atmospheric conditions ( weather ) and soil conditions play critical roles in the formation of these tree's.
Ceri would be a good person for this subject as if I recall, he has been building violins and would possess more in-depth knowledge of the instrument and its materials.

So wood density matters, cannot be like a piece of rubber ( extreme dampening ) say cheap acoustics made from 3+ ply laminates, but neither can it be as dense as a piece of marble. It's about resonance or more specifically vibration transmission.
If you look at a piece of wood vertically cutacroos the grain, under a microscope from the cut end, you will see that it is made up of tiny little channels, some are smaller or larger in diameter. These channels or capillaries (looks like straws tightly packed ) and their alignment, meaning that all the grain runs in one perpendicular direction will determine resonance in that baulk of wood.

There is a lot of Alchemy and Myth on the subject of tone tapping. But it is simple, it is about holding a top of an acoustic or an electric and tapping it with a finger. Depending on the species, age, moisture content and grain configuration, each piece of wood will have it's own voice. similar to some of the same species or cut from the same baulk but still slightly different. This resonance and the sound it emits will tell you wether that particular baulk or top has tonal properties you want.
Critical to an acoustic, like a Lowden or Larrivee. Even Taylors have amazing sound for a mass produced instrument. A $200 dollar acoustic on the other hand sounds dull and lifeless.

OK ... So that is my basic knowledge on wood and it's musical applications.

Then again a well placed tap on the cranium of an imbecile will also emit a pleasing tone

And now back to our normally scheduled program . 8)

Spent more for that bridge than I have on some whole guitars and unless I come across a black Tele style bass bridge I'd like to keep it. Tried several basses with N3 Noiseless pickups before I settled on them for this build and they didn't seem overly bright. Can you suggest an electronic component switch to add more warmth? I was thinking different tone cap value.

Even though I play bass, your electronic tone question would be better in the Bass and Pick-up section of the Forum. I have not experimented with Basses. But remember that your Amp is also going to be 50% of your tone....

As I said before I would like to stay on topic in this thread... I don't want to diverge away from the topic here. As this has taken much longer than I ever anticipated. I'm sure those who have followed would like to see more progress on the Telepartster and the 1st part of this thread...

Correct, they are. less tension than the original and more appealing.

The barrels I bought at a music /guitar shop I have been going to for 25 years, Wakefield Music in Wakefield R.I. The back plate I was just lucky John @ WM had one in gold the parts bin. Those are not easy to find. If you don't have a great music / Guitar / Parts shop near you then the best online is these links.

www.Lmii.com ( Luthiers Mercantile International )

That was like me, driving from Suffolk County on LI, up to Eastcoast Music in Danbury, years before Ed moved to Vegas.
