Corners are rounded and the neck is a Telecaster Deluxe Neck 70's style bullet truss rod.
Will not need to unscrew the neck to adjust the truss rod...
I wouldn't use that system in any builds, it's just pointless even though I understand the vintage look, but some adjustment parameters have to be modernized..

I totally agree - that, makes the world a better place - at least for some minutes :D

Interesting strategy.
The new Fender Select Stratocastere include
"Bi-FlexTM truss rod system for rock-solid stability"

What is it about a truss rod system positive/negative
that factored into your design?
Difficulty?
Just wondering? Toppscore

It really has not entered the equation as both the Telepartster I and Stratopartster IV are both builds that do not feature a heel adjusted truss rod.
I wanted a 70's style Strat and the Tele is loosely based on a James Burton Tele as well as combining an Aerodyne / Carved rear routed bodies......
Hey.... if you don't go for the ceiling what's the point.... :?:  Eh... :!: :!:

I have some updates for today but I need to go ride and take a break.....

Well the sun came back out and Bollocks I just had to get this neck pocket " DONE "

So 1st I had to reshape my Template, as I had tear out on the upper Big horn and a couple places I was just not satisfied with the shape.....

Image

Once reshaped, I just clamped it up and recut the contour....

Image

This is the tear out...  and the followup fix...

Image

As can be seen just above the tearout, the recontoured body is clear of any tearout....
This required a very slow routing back and forth to not tear out once again as this section of the body had the grain directly perpendicular to the spinning router..

Image

Now I have a Telepartster I body ready for the next phase

So on to the neck pocket...... 8) 8)
Cutting out the pocket in the template takes one important detail.....

Image

Earlier I cut an identical template just in case and I anticipated that one template is just not enough for all the different routings and I want just one with an outline only for future Tele builds.....( Yes it does become somewhat of an addiction....)

Image

The critical part here is how to ensure that the templates pocket is aligned centrally since the neck is somewhat triangular from nut to heel ( sort of )..
The easiest way is to take a string and line it up with the center point at the bodies tail and the center point at the nut.
Lining up the neck this way visually with center marks as well as the fret dots allows an easy set up....

Image

That done I ligned up both templates one on top of the other....I screwed up the 1st pocket cut and angled the low E side of the pocket slightly so it would show a gap, the neck would sit skewed  and so it had to be redone on the new template...

Image

The depth of this cut is 5/8th of an inch, my router bit is too long so doubling the templates allowed me to set the correct depth and to go to town....

Image

I have to admit anxiety reigned here because a slip or mistake and this body is firewood...
I also had to move the templates outward in order to be able to cut out the more open section of the pocket.....This was done very carefully and I do not advise doing it this way or for that matter the next time I will have a squared off template ( swimming pool style route )

Yeah..... Thank You...It was repairable with filler made from Maple sanding dust and Titebond but there also was tear out in the Walnut so I would have always had a glipsch at that joint..
No I'm glad it was minor and no one will know the difference.....

Let's see... :? Where was I... :?:
So here is the pocket, cut out and ready for test fitting........ :?:

Image

The fit is really good, snug but not tight and it is Dead on Center...... 8)

Image

This is sort of like what the final layout will be, the Volume and Tone knobs will be realigned according to my playing and the fact that I like to be able to use the Volume as a swell effect which in a normal Tele is not readily possible... The Lace sensors are black smooth, no visible poles and just a lace sensor name in blue red and silver......

Image

There is still a bit of sanding on the inside of the pocket wall at the neck heel as the fit is not quite right, but that is always the case.... Pencil marks will be removed a bit later as I still need them for a perfect neck fit..

It's begining to look like a real guitar instead of a disassembled idea of wood blocks and glue lines.
Next will be routing out for the bridge and drilling out for the string ferrules, I may inset the bridge into the body but that will depend on saddle adjustment possibilities or lack of ...

Image

Once again as I think about it I'm not sure about carving the top and back since this body will have the contours of a Strat for the forearm and the belly ( which I do not have...yet.. ))

Another question of interest.
Why, do you think, Fender neck-butt ends are rounded
instead of fitting in perfectly geometrically 90 degree squared?

Would not it be easier to NOT MAKE MISTAKES with truly squared edges
than trying to make round edges meet and connect correctly?

Just wondering :)

Off the top of my head.....Router bits are round, it's not possible to square off a corner without a very small diameter bit which would be prone to shearing and become dull very quickly.

Or in addition squaring off the corners requires hand work, with chisels, thus labor, thus more cost in the manufacturing process.
There is always some handwork involved but if you can eliminate 3/4 of the building process by using tools which (1) simplify (2) accelerate (3) raise the level of accuracy then... :?:

Also aesthetically, if you look at a kit guitar you will see squared edges which need to be rounded off....But that is an entirely separate discussion in the building process..

And as Human beings we prefer rounded edges.....

Yeah. I was envisioning the chisel & hammer wacking.
Good points. Answered. Thanks

A bit of a delay since I have been busy with work and also awaiting some parts for this project..
In the meantime I will tease with a couple of pics for the next project.....

What is 7 feet long by 2 inches thick by 13.5 inches wide...... :?:

Image

Topside view for now \/ \/

Image

Back side view for now \/ \/

Image

Image

Just to remind anyone that the clear lexan template is wider than an actual Stratocaster body template by at least 3/4 of an inch. It is a visual template to view where to position the dimensional template afterwards.

Image

Image

Answer to the question is ..... Ash.... 8)
There is enough here for 2 Stratocaster bodies and two Precision Bass bodies.
But this isn't until all the other projects are completed......

He has given me the fever too! I am not competent enough to build my own neck yet, but I think I may buy a Warmoth neck and build my own Strat body. I want to do a "Drop top" Strat with a maple top and an ash back.
