Lay out for this guitar will still be.... Texas Specials pups RW/RP, Master Volume, Master TBX tone pot....The question is wether the Volume will be an S1 switch ( if it is compatible with Texas Specials) with a standard Five way or will it be a normal Volume with a superswitch instead of the 5 way.... :?:  Any  from resident wiring afficionado's....
It is a hardtail, an AMD gold with black saddles and thru body stringing... I picked this as I'm never thrilled with most of the Tele's bridge/pickup set up..Less is more...

But I may swap pups with the Stratopartster ( 69's ) as I really would prefer black cover pups and I don't believe I can remove the Texas Specials covers and switch them to black without risking damage to them... :?:

Nice set of hardware and electronics.
Are you going to have a pickguard or backside electronics cavity?

After dropping by both Empire Guitars, chatting with Mike and then later to Wakefield Music, the layout as far as pups is changed once again hopefully for the last possible time.
Texas Specials are not going to work for the Telepartster as I'm going for a James Burton sound setup, the TS's will be great in the Stratopartster.

Burton uses special pickups made for him and I don't know if they are available on their own...
If not I'm going to go with the nearest set that will get that sound, should be between the 69's or perhaps 57/62 vintage strats or Dick Dale Custom 54's....

53 Magna ~ Have you ever given the Guitar Fetish line-up of pickps a look?
They have quite a few vintage 1950s & 1960s pickups.
Also, if you give them the James Burton (one of my all-time favorite guitarists)
pickup specs or link, they will gladly tell you what works.

I purchased my set of three Jimi Hendrix reverse wound pickups
and my 12k Stacked single coil sized humbucker for my HSH guitar from them
Absolutely a great find of great pricing, great products and a great aray of vintate pickups.

Yes I did, but quite some time ago. I will keep them in mind.
But I did some searching yesterday over on the Telecaster Forum, "Igotquack" has a review of the Burton Tele as I'm imitating. he posted a vid and did a nice job of reviewing the JB in 3 or 4 different configurations.
I missed it before but it was right in front of me. The JB standard Tele has Texas Specials, the 3 pickup version is Lace Sensors . I have used/played them before and liked them. They actually lead me to use SCN's in my Crimson Strat. So Red Blue and Silver set is what I'm going for, that with an S1 switch, a TBX tone will give me versatility in shaping the sound for the tune..

Now I need to find the Lace Sensors dimension specs so I can make the templates I need to rout out the cavities.
I spent yesterday measuring and re-contouring, laying out where the bridge has to sit on a 25.5 scale, but most importantly was making sure that once I cut the neck pocket, it is of the correct depth. The Deluxe neck is incrementally different than other necks I worked with so it's a unique pocket rout. since there is no pick guard to hide below, all the routing has to be exact....There will not be a second chance to get it right....

I see a Burton Telecaster with SSS special pickups.
Do you equate those the to Lace Sensors?

Then I see a Burton Telecaster with two SS pickups.

Where did you get the info that the Burton SSS's are similar to Lace Sensors.
This is interesting. Toppscore :)

Mind you, I have no idea what is what regarding the Burton pickups.
Just very interested as I am a big fan of Rockabilly

On the MIA $1700 guitar specs it states:
Special-design James Burton blade pickups. Lace must mfg
blade pickups that James Burton has it customized to his tastes. Looks cool.
That is a great video. Just interested. Thanks. Toppscore

I am on the Templating Phase, or to be more exact, laying out for the neck pocket, Pickup location and bridge locations.
These measurements and reference marks must be calculated and marked out while the body blank is still uncontoured as far as belly contours, top carves etc..

I just layed up the neck and hard tail for visual, they are not exactly where they will mount...

Image

The Blue tape is just for an easy reference point @ the 16th fret which is vertically above the leading edge of the neck pocket. The small pen marks are center line references to align the neck parallel to the body's center line.
Just the distance from the leading edge of the neck pocket to the end of the neck below the 21st fret is 1/8th" in width difference, or plainly stated, the neck widens continuously from nut to heel.
Missing that detail usually results in a misaligned neck when one edge of the neck is used to line it up to the common center line..

Image

The Template was off-scale just a slight bit. It was 12-7/8" at it's widest hip whereas it should be 12-3/4".
I needed to resize it as well as reshape it to a smoother outline.
This means that tomorrow I will re-route the body contours.

Image

I've also marked out the neck pocket routing guide lines, not too difficult, a 25.5 scale.
This will also be tomorrow's agenda...

I also have marked out an additional template, this will be for pick up location and what not.
I find it easier to make a full size template which matches the body.
Rather than a small template for routing pickups and other necessities....

Man. I cannot imagine the calculations
needed to make the neck pocket so the string action is perfect.
Hats off to you. Toppscore :)

The calculations are not as difficult as they seem.
All of the measurements are readily available, the scale is 25.5 which is the starting point.
From there it's figuring the place where the bridge sits, 25.5 being the measurement where the bridge saddles sit at their travel midpoint.

Next is figuring how deep will the neck be routed into the body, this has to correspond with the bridge and it's saddle height at their lowest setting.

Then most of this is reverse engineering, the dimensions are posted if not on this Forum, on the Tele section of the Forum and also the Telecaster Forum has been of great help.
Since I don't really have to figure out the calculations from scratch, it's just adapting them to the final guitar layout...
With a slopped/ slightly carved Top, the body is thinner in places, the action will be differently setup to feel like ...normal....Not quite sure how to put this into text, but this is about feel and this will be the part that gets figured out as I go...
There are only general directions for carved tops, since they are expensive to make and only a small percentage of players want that.....

But Tele's and Strat's are fairly simple in that unlike Gibson Les Paul's the hard tail or Tremolo sits close to the body, but a Les Paul tune magic bridge and separate tail piece are raised quite a bit which necessitates an angled neck to body plane..
Fender's Strat's and Tele's rely on a flat plane.
Leo was a great engineer, very astute in designing a better mousetrap for the player/musician, one that would be simple to adjust, to replace parts if needed and just a better guitar more suited to the needs of a constantly traveling musician...

Are the dep neck-pocket corners squared or rounded?
How do you allow for the truss-rod activity and alignment?
