Edge binding, please! :D

So I just couldn't wait until friday to return to Downes and Reader....
I just wasn't satisfied with my earlier choices of Walnut..

However it is necessary to clarify that the earlier selection of Walnut was decently grained...
But the following pics are of Figured Walnut.....Much more selective as well as much more expensive, almost 3.5 times more expensive....But the extra cost will be worth it..... 8) 8)

The following are a few pics of the lumber warehouse....A Ceri request....

There are more pics but this may quench the thirst for some, there is an extensive selection of hardwoods and I think it will be fun to visit over the future..next few years...

in the previous post I did mention that this latest purchase was expensive..$180.00 to be exact..So that was an 8 foot long x 8 inches wide x 2 inches thick Board or ( 10 brdft ) of Figured Walnut...That is the distinction in the higher costs.....

Also this is going to be a Double Build, A Stratocaster as well as a Telecaster, so it is critically important that all the pieces are laid out at the same time as far as necks and bodies, then hardware.
Both will share similar characteristics in the woods for both the tops and bottoms since they are from the same stock.....
At this point I have located and decided upon all the hardware, which I will update once I confirm what I found is still available.
As for the Stratocaster neck....It has to be a 70's Style, same graphics as the Tele Neck and close to the same figuring....This I am searching for.....As likely it will reveal itself when I least expect to....

I feel that an update is due....Not so much for hardware but rather for visual effect.
I ripped one side of the smaller piece left over after cutting the pieces for the Builds.
After ripping I crosscut the ends....

Figured Walnut is extremely dense, best cut with a very sharp carbide blade as it is prone to burn marks from blade friction resulting in attempting to cut with a dull blade.

So Caveat Emptor to anyone following this and contemplating using Walnut...
That being said, once I cut it I was quite pleased with the figuring as it really stands out.
I also sanded the cuts with an orbital sander with 80 than 60 grit...More than enough as it is still in the roughing in stage....

BTW...The last photo was taken without a flash hence the much softer yellow hue...

Hi 53... Sunburst here, I'm following your build with wide eyed enthusiasm; however, not being well versed in the subtleties of wood could you please explain the characteristics of "figured" as opposed to non-figured?

Thanks... great job by the way

Interesting thread! Hopefully there will be lots of updates with photos, as I'm now relying on this thread for entertainment over the holidays!!!

Really looking forward to seeing how it turns out, and jealous as hell that I don't have the skill set to try a similar project!

Thank You for the compliments from all...But they are a bit premature as much work remains to be accomplished, not the least of which is slicing those ( 8" wide x 2" thick x 20" long ) slabs correctly so that I have book-matched halves for both tops and bottoms of the bodies....

In other words the bodies will be made up of 4 pieces, 2 book-matched pieces for the back/bottom of the Strat and Tele...And Two Pieces for the Tops/Fronts of the Strat and Tele.
Cut at about 3/4 of an inch for the tops and same for the bottoms should leave me enough to cut out matching back plates instead of flopping in plastic covers/plates.

To your question of figured versus non figured....
It refers to the woods grain pattern, in this instance on my initial posts I included pics of the slabs of Walnut I first bought....
The grain is nice, there are some areas which will demand filling in with filler made from the Walnuts sanding particles and glue.....But since the tops are going to be Hard Maple ( Acer Saccharum ) and it is ripple figured thus I chose to match the figuring in the Walnut....Since the driving factor was the neck being also lightly figured.

The wood ( both Walnut and Maple ) although belonging to the same species are actually a separate genus for figured the examples.

Ironically, the qualities we seek in such wood figuring is actually deceased wood/tree's of which the chaotic looking grain pattern being the result....

I must warn you that this will take a bit longer than this Holiday's time span....I would include well into next year if not next season's holidays.....

Hello And Bump In the Night......
My Apologies to those who've been patiently awaiting updates on this Telepartster Build.
The below pic is of the Walnut and Maple slabs having just been run through my worksite 10" Table Saw...I will admit a 12" blade would have made things easier but proper shop size Table saws and Miter and Bandsaws is for the future shop which is a whole other project and has not been designed or built..( But it is always a present thought... )

Image

Cut and sliced and ready to be opened to see wether there will be a nice bookmatch or an average two piece....

Image

Yes....It has potential, now those black marks are from the saw blade, I changed to a brand new never used 60 tooth carbide blade and still there was some binding and a bit more friction than I wanted to see....It gives you an idea as to how dense Walnut, especially figured Walnut is.
So let's see after a bit of Clean Up...

Image

Voila...This after a bit of handplaning and a run with the orbital sander with 60 Grit..
This is just a rough clean up.....

Image

Bookmatched...this will be the Tele's Back or Bottom however you wish to view.... 8)

Image

Just for a different look I flipped the boards, bookmatched ends are now on the left and right exterior....

Image

This is the as of yet unseparated Figured Maple top

Image

This one will have to wait another day for discovery...or at least to post on this thread, I did split them and the two halves are what I was looking for but a lot of clean up is required before showing

Image

At this point all the halves need to be (1st) Cut Square, (2nd) run thru the Joiner Planer ( edges that is, (3rd) Run thru the planer for a flat and matching thickness for both bookmatched halves.....

Then they will be glued and clamped and left to sit for a few days......
An Ex-Teammate ( Cycling ) happens to live just on the other side of the hill from me, as he is a formidable cabinet maker and has a gorgeously set up Post N Beam Shop, I will run the halves thru his Planer and joiner for a perfect glue joint on all pieces...

Please Stay Tuned, It will not be as long as the last update,
However I still have not located a 70's style Maple neck to match the Tele...

Yes as I mentioned it before this is actually a Strat and Tele with matching bodies Build.. 8)

hi 53magnatone , you have got some real nice timber there for you'r build , walnut and maple , it's going to be heavy , which might not bother some people but it would me  . I'm a joiner /carpenter as well , been at it for 26 years now and the industry has all but done me in , knees are buggered as is back , hips and just recently the shoulders have got the dreaded arthritus (thats why i'm off today , i done something to my left shoulder yesterday , i was almost crying  but enough of me :D i look forward to watching you're build progress , and as Ceri has said , post plenty of pics please , cheers
Alan

Hello Alanssaab, Thank you for the positive post, It ( or they ) will be a bit heavier than an Alder or Ash Strat or Tele, but that will be a small disadvantage for the distinction of figured wood.
However neither will be as heavy as my old Les Paul Custom, which was the main reason I switched to Strats..

I can sympathize on the demands of Carpentry, I also have been in Carpentry/Construction since I was a Teen, Today I'm off to work on a Bay window roof repair on an 1850 Victorian, a flat roof covered with a bituminious membrane ( badly installed leaks like a pool ), strip both the membrane and sheathing, reframe with a slight pitch and the whole thing will be recovered with a seamed copper paneled roof and all the slate tiles replaced on the hips... Fortunately I have no issues with overworked joints....

But back to the subject.....

So.... Ceri...Xhefri....A-BigHair...Martian...ZZ-Doc....A question to you all and also anyone else who would like to input....
This piece is too small for a Strat or Tele body...It measures 14.5 inches in lenght, 7.25 inches in width and 2 inches in thickness.....

Image

Now I could make a Strat shaped Electric Mandolin body or a 3/4 sized Strat or Tele, say a travel guitar......And it will be book-matched of course but It may just be an all Walnut top and Bottom.

Any suggestions fellow Forumites... :?:  :?:

Hi 53 (and everyone). Been away, so just doing a catch-up. Glad to see this thread is ticking over gradually. For instance:

Nice book-matching! Kudos. 8)

And can't wait to see inside that lump of maple. From the outside there will be some righteous flaming to be found in there!

Dunno - I bow to your judgement. Though the idea of an electric mandolin presses my buttons (and it would be a first for the Fender Forum).

Whatever, you've got to do something with it. That is a gorgeous bit of rippling you have on that piece of walnut. Have at it!

Carry on, big fella - C
