Thanks for the reply
It's a shame most suppliers don't make base plates for string trees, like you have. They finish the look off

I have always felt that the great small music stores deserve 1st consideration. Online is great but I more often can find what I really want at three stores that have been around for a long time.

Now THIS is small

Image

The story behind this place, is it was originally a DIY shop despite it being narrow, it is very long with a workshop at the back
I used to call in occasionally for masking tape , wooden battens etc (I used to do tiling and had a contract nearby). Anyway, I went in one day and saw a Gibson 335 in the window, I asked the owner what the story was and he told me it was his son's and he had put it in the shop window to sell it for him

It generated a lot of interest , both being on a busy crossroads and also being the only place that was selling a guitar for literally miles around ..............A few weeks later, I called in again and found he'd got more guitars in and a few amps (people had asked him if he'd put their used guitars in the window too) . Fast forward 12 months and he had a good inventory of decent guitars and tube amps , as well as strings, capos, leads and effect pedals

He's a really nice guy who always offered me a coffee when I called in and now, he just sells music gear, the DIY is a sideline

Router set up for final depth on control pot cavity, pickup cavity depth and hard tail block insert cavity.
All different depths but all completed today.

Image

I usually don't like to use a router and bit close to their maximum range of extension, but here I didn't have a choice as i only have 4 bits to choose from of various cutter depth. It works fine in the end as long as caution is observed and material is removed in small increments of thickness.
It does take longer and I could use the plunge attachment but with a body that has this much work and time invested I much prefer taking my time...

Image

Also it is not as if I can glue on a patch piece once totally screwed up.

As the photo shows I'm taking about 3 to 4mm off each pass. Each time checking to make sure that i reach only to the minimum depth I need for the pot shafts to show 4-6 spirals of thread for the washer and nut.
It's not as if they will be great stress on the knobs so they do not need to be reenforced with concrete (lol)

Image

This is the final depth look for all cavities.

Image

I also filed out the slot for the 5 way switch, left is to enlarge and countersink its screw holes.

Image

I still have not made up my mind wether or not to use maple or Walnut for all the cavity plates. Will think about that later today but I very possibly will cut samples from both. I can always use the others in one of the other projects.
Once those are cut and fitted I will return to final neck fitting, drilling the holes to thread the wires and countersink the recessed Jack .
Still much to do with this beast...

BTW.. Ceri or Xhefri, any advice on what to consider to highlight the grain underneath a clear lacquer coat ? or more to the point giving it the illusion of depth but not applying a blanket thick coating. ??

Since I'm on the subject of final options. Next is deciding if ( or not ) I should give the upper bout a relief like a Stratocaster for the forearm, a shallow belly contour and a contoured cutaway for the higher fret reach ??? Hmmmm !!

Today was Template making.
The recessed covers for the pickups as well as the control cavity. Simple to make really but it does have drawbacks. Which I want to emphasize.

Image

This below is the completed template for the 4 rear / back covers on a Stratocaster / Stratopartster body or a Walnut Telepartster body.. I have mentioned earlier in this thread that I use MDF 1/4 inch thickness sheets for cutting out templates.

I cut or more accurately routed the shapes out with my small Bosch router.
(1) MDF is extremely volatile, emits fine particles when cut, shaped or whatever.
(2) Point being I wear a respiratory mask, a thick paper ( at the minimum ) mask. I also wear charcoal OSHA approved masks that I use at work but I didn't need them today.
(3) So to anyone playing with MDF ( Medium Density Fiberboard ) always wear a mask. Or some day in the future you will wonder why you spend your days unable to breathe and much worse... ( Done with my concern for Fenderites :-)

So this photo below is for layout purposes, visual in that it has made my decision that Maple with light figuring will be the most striking for the backplates.
I may at some time in the future build another Telepartster same as this but with a Maple body and walnut as covers and all. Just a reverse of the Walnut / Maple layout on this Guitar.
( .... Which I Want To Plug In And Hear .... !!!  But it is not for a little while yet )

Image

That is it for today, I will hopefully have time later tonight to begin cutting the plates, fitting and locating recessed screw holes and finally working on the raising and lowering system for the pick ups.
In general terms, I still need to cut and fit the rear bridge block and glue it in, then locate where the string ferrules will be located, re-drill the neck body screw attachments, locate and drill the recessed jack and then finally shape and contour the body and prepare it for it's Lacquer Coats.

Speaking of Lacquer over Walnut and Maple, I will be spraying a semigloss super clear coat(s) which will be clearer than a Poly finish. Watco is the brand and yes, it is going to be with rattle cans unless I decide to buy a sprayer gun before long.
Have to research a bit on the actual viscosity of this brand of lacquer and see if (1) I'll have to use a spray gun ( 2) Will I need to dilute the lacquer and / or add a hardener....

Cut these samples out of Maple pieces I had left over. Upon seeing them in place, I am not satisfied with these and found another solution.

Image

I have pieces left over from installing 3/4" Cherry hardwood floor. These pieces will be what i will cut the next samples from. They are refinished so will take less preparation. Will add pics later.

Bump... Time flies when school and work take precedence over fun projects. That and fabricating stainless steel 2.5" cat back exhaust for the S4....

Anyhow, the Tele is all shaped to its final form, the rear covers are all cut to fit and so forth.. So onward with uploading pics of a too long overdue project but it is nearly completed .... Well you all be the judge of the final shape and all..

This is pretty much the next phase.

Image

It took me a while to decide on just what shape the body would be. Would I also include a belly concave in the rear of the body as well as the forearm $@!&# on the front ??
Final decision was that this is a Tele style and the Strat style belly shape was superfluous. The forearm $@!&# is ergonomically valid whereas the belly cavity is ... " Not " ....... edit ...... The word s.l.o.p.e is censored ??? I mean really ?

1st off is shaping with the spokeshave. A bit tricky as walnut is a hardwood, dense and being figured tends to chip and pull if taking anything but small thin cuts....

Image

The next pic gives a clearer view of the forearm body sloping . Next was sanding all contours..

This is skipping ahead a bit but here is what the lower forearm contour looks like in final sanded form.
I'm actually pleased with the results and will have a tough time awaiting the Lacquer to cure over the next couple of weeks. ( Yes I am almost at that point of spraying body and covers for the pups, control cavity and neck plate.... Neck plate ??
Getting ahead here so in due time ( no puns intended )...

Image

More of a relief view...

Next phase was to attack cutting and shaping the three pup rear covers, The control cover and the neck plate cover.. More on the latter in the next post.

Image

I had initially intended to use cherry wood or maple for all 4 covers. But after several stain variations, none except walnut was giving me the effect i liked.
I am particular and well I may as well cut out poly covers at that point...

These are the covers, cut from a separate piece of Walnut... As a side note, the back covers for the Stratopartster, the one in figured maple is actually a sheet cut from the rear of the baulk I used for the body. Thus the grain patterns will all match but that is for the next thread which I should be able to start quite soon.

Image

So the question is .... What's up with the tail / bridge block :?: Back when I drilled thru the body for the string ferrules, the drill bit wandered offline, or out of plumb if you will. I tried to drill thru the body too rapidly as walnut is really dense and being figured varies from one grain pattern to the next.
Thus my solution was to route out a cavity and glue in a form fitting bridge plug. Again I reversed my decision and used Maple instead of Walnut. Once all sanded we'll see if it was indeed the right choice. ( if not it stays regardless )

Thought I would also add this here today ( June 24 )
