Will update a little later, just returned from Lowes and picked up a few things in the hardware section that I didn't realize they carried. I think the peeps will approve.

But 1st Today's update.
I left off with needing to route for control cavity, pup cover recess. In order to correctly route out the control cavity I first needed to locate where the template would be. Easiest way to find the exact location was to drill completely thru the body all 3 Vol/tone/tone control shaft holes. I also did the exact location holes in the template, lined them up and voila.

Image

Then cut out the template cavity and off to the route.

Image

The control cavity did need to be slightly enlarged for the pots to fit snugly but not jammed. I did not want a big rear cavity, since there really isn't that much space. Caveat is that I will need to solder Vol/tone/tone before installing all three of them as a unit.

In all this phase went well. There was a bit of an anxiety as to wether I had located everything correctly but the next 2 pics show it came out as it should.

Image

The white bottom in the cavity is actually the figured male center strip that is sandwiched between the bookmarked tops and bottoms.

I have to cut out the covers next, I may have access to a small stash of Black Walnut which has been stored after milling for at least 35 years. But next is the neck plate pocket to be reshaped and all.
Also the control cavity is not routed out to final depth. It will be later but first I need to be certain of the depth the pot shafts exit. . There is no retracing these steps if I goof up .... Ooops !

For aesthetic reasons I felt the block insert in the bridge section should match the pup covers. Gold string ferrules for thru body stringing. Necessary in a hard tail setup. It increases string resonance by providing a more solid string anchoring system

Hi Doc...
Life is good, a few potholes along the way. I really needed to step back as I wanted this project to be as well executed as possible.
I have just proven to myself that it was the correct decision. I have made some revisions in the neck / plate / attachment and location which proved a bit problematical when combined with a beveled heel.
Need to cut out a couple templates so not sure if today will bring a completed update.

Yes it is cold here in NE CT. Was on my way to work when it began to snow heavily. Day off, a 2-1/2 hour RT commute to Essex is not what I want to do. No problem for me with Quattro but I'm amazed at the number of people who are unprepared for winter.

Enough thread jacking on my part, back to the subject at hand.

Cheers

BTW, anyone have any feedback on Texas Special Pickups with TBX tone pots ? I am thinking of adding the x-tra capability of dialing in either the Bass or Treble but having never had TSP's not sure of the audible result.

No suggestions from anyone on the TBX with Texas Specials and their reverse wound / reverse pole ??
I'll list in the pup section then ...

Onward it is while awaiting an answer.
It seems we are in lieu of another snowstorm up here in the quiet corner of Connecticut. so far within the last 2-1/2 weeks this will add up to 5+feet of snowfall.... Glad i like winter... Going out to buy snowshoes today.

But to the topic at hand.
As I mentioned ( has it really been a month ? ) last previous post my current dilemma was in resolving the pup adjustment screw / spring setup in a completely hidden, rear access set up.
Lowe's provided the answer in their hardware bin section.
I chose oval headed phillips Brass machine screws in 10-24 x 1"1/2 ( only length available ) which means I'll have to cut them down to length and run the threads thru my tap & die set... ( easy enough ).
These will thread into an aluminum threaded post. 1" extension.
resistance provided by a spring set.
So the adjustment system will be completely hidden inside the back plate. the screws oval head being the only part visible in their recessed locations.

Probably does not make sense but pics which I'll upload will visually explain.

I'll also add that the adjustment system needed to be figured out before I proceeded any further with routing out to thickness both the top pickup cavity lip ( which covers the pickups adjustments form the top ) as well as the back plate and how far to route the recess and thickness of the pups backplates.

So pics in the process of being created ( love digital )

Hate to think we have to pray for snow so you get this project completed.

No Doc ... Just some of us are busier than expected. I'm also renovating my bathroom, kitchen, living and bedroom. It was time as I decided I was going to keep the house. It just took me a year to be mostly away and rethink. Part of that process is transforming the house to what I envisioned versus what ( very past tense ) " WE " had envisioned. So that has really been the major obstacle.

I had intended to be updating sooner but winter is back with a vengeance in these parts. So beside snow removal and other challenges, I just have not had the time to sit and think. Bear in mind that I'm at the point here where a screwup is GAME OVER and this nice book matched figured Walnut project goes in the wood stove.

Anyway so here's a couple of pics.

1st a selection of springs which most do not work since the tension would be too strong. Only the thinner one's will work.

Image

This is the inserts and screw attached to a spare pup cover.

Image

And screws on sleeve posts.

Image

These are just for showing what I'm up to. Next will be measurements and routing out.
Then I will rough cut all my covers and backplate fillers. I thought I would contrast by using Figured Maple but the dark walnut will be more of a visual contrast.

BTW ... I have to have this guitar completed and ready to play by the end of March as I promised 2 local pro guitarists ( one who just finally got the recognition he deserved by being inducted in Rhode Island Music hall of fame, his band " The Schemers " ).

Hey 53 - been offline a few years and had to start over with a new handle but sure enjoying your build.

Just wondering - is the maple sandwiched between the walnut on the Tele for tone or for looks?

I had a custom Tele made a year or 2 ago out of redwood. Liked it and had the guy make me a matching Tele-Bass. The redwood on the Tele is very bright and not long after I put the bass order in I decided was too bright for bass and asked him to sandwich some mahogany inbetween hoping it would give me some extra warmth. Was too late so got all redwood and as expected it is kind of bright. Wondering how much difference a second kind of wood changes the tone.

Hi fenderfan. That is a question which is a bit too early to tell. Since I have not attached the thru body tail piece, neck and strung it all up, I couldn't say.

But the Figured Maple strip was both visual and structural. I wasn't totally satisfied as to how the book matched pieces lined up so the T shaped maple center is the result. I had initially intended to sandwich a contrasting wood in between the Walnut but Maple ended up as the final choice. I may decide to reverse the contrast on the next Telepartster but that is not yet upon the horizon. Still much to do on this project.
Not to mention I have 3 Strat and 1 Tele body awaiting in the wings. 1st of those will be the Figured Maple Strat body, then the 2 single piece Ash bodied Strats and finally the one piece Ash body Tele.
After life's little detours I am finally ( albeit slowly ) getting back to resetting my shop and starting to build these Strats and Tele's.

One of the ash body Strats will be in a Mary Kaye translucent blonde finish. I may decide to match the Tele Ash body as well. That is all the amount of planning for those future projects.

Thanks for the info. Think if I have him build me another bass will go with something warmer between the redwood top and bottom. Thinking should have gone with a rosewood fretboard instead of maple neck for a bit warmer tone but wanted it to match the tele he made for me. Both same wood, black hardware, tele bodies and headstocks.

Maybe later I'll pick the brains of some of the forum's electronic wizards and see if they can recommend something to add warmth - different tone cap or warmer pickups than the Fender N3's.

To be perfectly honest I'm not at all convinced of the tone properties where electric guitars are concerned. Choice of hardware and electronics make up 80% of your instruments tone. Now I'm also basing my opinions on being an acoustic finger style player. I played thru 2 mid 90's Larrivee Acoustics. One a small bodied florentine cutaway the other a Grand Concert body. Also playing classical on a classical guitar. Not a nylon string guitar aimed at an electric player but a true classical guitar. I also played violin and viola.
So my tones are based on acoustical instruments properties more than one's in the electromagnetic segment.
That being said, how the instrument resonates is crucially important. There cannot be dead zones ( damping zones between the string saddles and the nut and tuners. The tighter the juncture of neck to body, critical in a bolt on, the less resistance will be present as a string vibrates ( oscillates ) then decays.
There's much more to it than wood selection. I have crappy guitars ( concerning wood selection ) which played thru excellent pickups and vintage amps sound amazing.

For the sake of argument, my approach in building acoustic guitars would be completely foreign to what I am doing with these Stratopartsters and Telepartsters.
They are really two separate universes. One produces sound thru a mechanical process ( acoustic ) the other thru an electro magnetic field. The two could not be further removed than North and South.
