I've got a two year old EJ and it doesn't have a flamed neck. The only EJ's I've seen with flamed necks are in ads. Maybe you can find one hanging on the wall in some store somewhere, but the flamed neck was not a part of the EJ's description. It's not like they don't have them anymore, they just never really did.

It's true. I've had my EJ Strat with a plain neck for about a year and a half after I had been jonesing for that model for months. Of the dozen or so examples I'd seen in stores, none of those had a flamed neck. As a matter of fact, I'd never even associated that kind of wood with the EJ Strat until I read this thread.

I guess if your only exposure to an Eric Johnson Stratocaster was three or four photos on the Fender website, you might be misled to expect something other than an impeccably crafted but plain-looking neck.

Georgeatt: The Clapton guitar was $2000 new.

After getting much talk and no action from the Fender Customer Service Folks who refused to take the instrument back claiming the "legalistic jargon" about Fender specifications are subject to change at any time, Samuel Music capitulated and agreed to take the instrument back. I agreed to pay a resonable re-stocking fee. I subsequently found a beautiful flame-neck EJ that sounded better than the one that was shipped to Samuel Music. This one is beautiful and I'll post pictures soon. This a new Guitar but was made in 07, I believe when the last few flame necks were produced. I would bet that all those advertisement pictures of the flame neck will soon give way to the plain maple necks now expicitly stated in the description/price list put out by Fender. I wonder if this means that Flame-neck EJs will be a collectors item, making them more valuable. :)

Georgeatt: I'm glad you got a guitar that pleases you.

For what it's worth, my plain-neck EJ Strat was made in 2006 so flame or not must have been a luck of the draw.

Enjoy.
