Hi,

I am replacing the stock humbucker in my Mexican Standard HSS Strat.

I'm putting in a DiMarzio Super Distortion, and I aready put the pickup in place, but I have a question regarding connecting the bare wire. It's supposed to be connected to ground, but I don't know where on I'm supposed to solder it.

All the rest of the wires were easy, I just put them into identical places, one for one, where the stock pickup wires were. Can anybody help me with this please?

I just want the standard humbucker wiring.

Also, if anybody could help me with locating the wiring diagram for my Strat, I would appreciate it....

Hi nywanderer1982,

If the wire is for ground, just solder it to the back of a pot where the other black wires are soldered.

This should be your wiring diagram.

if you don't have a good high watt iron, solder it to the tab that is bent up to the pot casing on the volume pot. that way you don't over heat the pot casing and damage the pot trying to solder it.

Good point somebizarredude

However, you will not harm the pot, even with an industrial strength soldering iron. One of the resident experimenters here (nikininja I believe), took a blow torch to a pot, and aside from looking charred on the outside, the pot was perfectly functioning afterward, and opening the pot revealed no damage. And it will take a good iron to solder to the back of the pot.

I guess it depends on the quality of the pot. a while back I had one that the plastic parts inside melted and it caused the wiper to warp. it was a really cheap pot in my nephews practice amp though. I will have to try the torch thing

 Yeah, unbelievable some of the cheap stuff used in some equipment. The OP's is a Mex Std, so I think the pots are good. Likely the same pots that the Am Std has.

Ahh...gotcha. I assume it would be the Volume pot?

Thanks for your help!

That will work, note the little black wires that connect all of the pot cases together so they are all the same point electrically. It is generally best grounding practice to have all grounds tied to only one place, especially to prevent noise, but the back of the pots can get crowded and some grounds might be connected to other pots too. Make sure that the bare wire is out of the way so that it doesn't touch and ground any other points of the circuit.

A stupid question, where is the red (hot) wire supposed to go? I wired it one for one same as the original.

I see on the diagram where the black and white wire pair is supposed to go, and I see where green goes. But red is not on the diagram? Or is it the bare that it doesn't show?

Just to clarify, I wired it incorrectly last night ( I put the green and the bare wires together and soldered them to the selector switch. I am getting sound out of the humbucker, but the it's incorrect because the two lowermost positions on the switch don't give me any sound.. So hopefully once I'll move the bare wire to the back of the pot that will get corrected.

With the DiMarzio, solder the black and white wires together and tape them off. The bare wire gets soldered along with the red wire to the back of your volume pot and the green wire goes to the pickup selector switch. If you find that the DiMarzio is out of phase with your middle pickup, reverse the red and green wires.

Thanks for your help. I soldered the bare wire to the same pot as the red (hot) wire and the results are phenomenal. I must say this pickup sounds pretty freakin' awesome in my new Strat!
