i placed a classic players 50 strat from gc that was at 450 on layaway.
sounded great, however i was taking a closer look at the les pauls around the same pricerange, due to me having 2 other strats.
anyway, i didnt really like them very much.i much rather like the sounds of the strats. i was pretty impressed with a SSH mim. mid position with some extra gain, sounded really nice and really held sustain nicely.
now my dilema,
SSH mim or classic players 50's...
any sugestions guys?

Not sure what features other than S-S-H that you prefer, but you might like the Lonestar :

I play both guitars, and right now I'm doing some recording utilizing a modified Highway 1 and a Les Paul Studio.

I like both tones. And it really depends on what kind of texture I'm trying to get out of the guitar. I hate to say this, but a humbucker is a humbucker...and although I realize full well that modern electronics have created some amazing fascimiles (I have Seymour Duncan JB Jr. in the bridge position in my strat) the tone is not exactly the same.

The action is also different. I find myself gravitating towards the strat if I'm playing with mild fuzz, or if I want a bright, clean sound. The Les Paul has a rounder sound and if it's a question of shooting for that 70's Nazareth/Led Zeppelin/ZZ Top sound I can't really get this kind of sound out of the strat. (I know...this isn't technical in terms of gain or decibels...) but it's also a question of style.

I think in your case OP...you're a strat man. But if you're looking for something a bit throaty with a fatter tone (and a humbucker sound) why not just get a cheaper strat and have it customized or modified? If this was me (and no, I'm not big into vintage guitars at all and I'm not sold on the VG over battery life issues) I'd get a MiM strat or a used one, and have humbuckers installed in the neck and bridge position, and I'd have a luthier fine-tune the neck on it. I'm sure there's a pickguard out there that will accommodate this arrangement.

thanks guys.
what do you think of the classic 50's player strat. i dont play any heavy stuff, i do like the clean hard rock, or gain or OD,
ive read some reviews how you cant play with distortion.
do they mean like heavy metal or jimi hendrix, eric clapton distortion?

by the way, i love that lone star SSH. duo texas special and pearlygates, must sound kick $@! with blues..

I think the 50s get a bit Squire sounding with more gain, however I expect you could do high OD, it just won't sound 100% great. IMO f*ck your face off Metal would kill the 50s, but Hendrix and Clapton? No problemo.

If you get the lonestar let us know what you think, I have been looking at one of those for a while, my local Fender dealer has yet to get one so i can play it.

The pup combo just has to be great texas singles and a pearly gates in the bridge, sounds like it should have been called the zz top strat.

while my first love is my strat, I'm currently having an affair of sorts with a Gibson SG standard. I found a left hand model that really sounds dirty....not as smooth as the strat, but hey, variety, that's the spice , right? I personally don't care fot the LP...weird huh?

Been a Gibson player for years and got my first strat last year. It's a fat strat w/EMGs. The EMG 85 'bucker screams but it still isn't a Paul - or SG for that matter. All depends on what music you play and what sound you're looking for (or used to). I don't believe you can have both in the same axe - they're just constructed so differently from the wood, to the neck, to the pups. Apples and Oranges - both great tastes but soooo different.

I agree with the previous statement and you really have to have a good idea of what you want your personal sound to be. I for years thought mine would come from a gibson because most of my heroes were gibson players, Zakk Wylde, Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons etc...but when I finaly gave Fender a chance and played alot of my own music with a strat I found that the tone and sound fit a lot better on a strat than a les paul.

I'm not sure if it is the same in the US, but here the Gibson Les Paul's cost a lot more for the same level guitar.

So if the price remains the same you would be getting a lower end ax.

Agree with the previous posts on the different sound.

Unfortunately, I've never had the opportunity to try it but I'll bet this is a really nice instrument. Things that caught my eye are the locking tuners... I really love the locking tuners on my 50th anniversary American deluxe strat. Soft V and 21 frets seems cool too. Top it off with the special pickups and pickup wiring and I know I'd like it! I prefer the smaller headstock as well.

well, classic 50th still on layaway, might pull out on friday.
im turned off with the les paul after all. my american strat does very well w/ distortion and/or od, high gain.
my hwy 1 sounds abit muddy, however, my hwy 1 needs a good set up. my am strat has been setup.

THE CONSENSUS HERE IS ULTIMATELY HAVE BOTH.

I OWN A CS STRAT WHICH I HAVE DISCUSSED IN THESE FORUMS BEFORE. IT IS BASICALLY A CLAPTON, FULL POWER W/SCN'S

I ALSO OWN A LES PAUL HERITAGE CS WITH BURSTBUCKERS. MAN.....THAT IS ONE SCARY SUCKER!!

IF I SET UP MY STRAT IN MY LINE 6 AX2 AND THEN SWITCH GUITARS WITHOUT TOUCHING ANYTHING ELSE....LOOK OUT!! JOSHUA BLOW YOUR HORN!!

IT'S LIKE ART WITH DIFFERENT PAINTS, BRUSHES, AND CANVAS. DIFFERENT TONE WOODS, FINISHES, SCALE, AND ELECTRONICS ETC.

STRATS WERE MY FIRST SERIOUS GUITARS OVER 50 YEARS AGO, AND ALWAYS MY FIRST GO TO INSTRUMENT. LOVE PLAYING THEM....EFFORTLESS.....WONDERFUL RANGE OF VOICINGS.....MAGIC1

BUT IF YOU WANT TO BLOW THE WALLS DOWN....MAN!....GOTTA PAY YOUR DUES AND PUT THAT HEAVY MAHOGANY MONSTER IN YOUR HANDS AND HAVE STRONG SHOULDERS TO HANG IT AROUND.

GO TO IT!!
