I have a beautiful 2004 American series strat. It plays and sounds great and the wood grain in the neck is really nice.

The thing that's got me a bit miffed though is that the front of the neck is all bumpy and mottled... not smooth at all. (You have to look closely and under good lighting).

Has anyone seen this on their strat and is there an easy DIY way to smooth out the surface of the fretboard?

I had the same problem on the fingerboard of a Strat from around then. I kept bending the strings in the affected area and they smoothed the lumps out for me. As a matter of fact, it didn't take much.
