I'm a big fan of the new MXR Custom Badass Distortion.

The GNX3000 has some interesting distortion presets, one of which emulates Gary Moore's signature crunch to perfection.

With the "Carlos" and "Numb" patches you'll get great Santan-ish/Gilmour-ish tones with the flick of a button.

Dave used a red Strat with a rosewood neck? Surely it's not the 1984 CAR '57 reissue !

Anyone ever try, or use Tech 21 boxes? I have the Bassdriver because I'm primarily a bass player. I've really got G.A.S. for a Strat and will definitely be buying some sort of pedal.

I would recommend a MI Audio Crunch Box Distortion. It's a boutique distortion pedal modeled after the british sound / Marshalls. It doesn't take up much real estate on your pedalboard either (it's smaller than MXR boxes). It has a 3PDT switch for true bypassing / no tone sucking. You can get high gain stuff from an almost 80's metal sound, to AC/DC to lighter blues tones. It also responds like a cranked tube amp in the fact that if you roll back your volume knob it cleans up well.

I owned a GNX3000. Although it sounded decent, it still just sounded too digital to me.

The Line 6 or Boss amp modellers. POD and whatever Boss calls theirs. I believe that Line 6 is better for the high gain sounds you're after. The ONLY reason I say this is because a modeller is the better option if you are purely a recreational guitar player, and don't want to invest in distortion, compression, flanger, wah, chorus, etc. pedals to nail 80's hair band sounds. I like analog sounds myself, and believe me it hurts to say this considering some of the guff encountered on this forum by their fanboys  , but if you're going to pay that kind of money for a modeller you should really invest in a better amp instead...and I recommend getting the Tweaker by Egnater. They do a lot of things very well for a respectable price.

I just picked up a Fulltone Plimsoul. It's a little pricey but in the short time I've had it, I really like it. It's very versatile too. It'll do the typical tubescreamer style overdrive tones but there's a stage two gain knob that will definitely take it into Marshall high-gain territory. I've been able to coax very convincing Marshall Plexi type tones out of it. I play a Strat with Vintage Noiseless pickups into a DRRI. Although it does the whole high-gain thing well, it's not going to do any death metal style stuff. Think more Marshall than Boogie.

It's typical Fulltone build quality too - pretty much indestructible. I'd recommend checking one out and seeing if it works for you.

I suggest getting a lovepedal OD 11. It really compliments the strat. Check out my demo

Hello everyone,

I am currently in the market for a distortion pedal to match with my strat. I am looking for something that might simulate the sound of a high gain head cranking through a couple of 412s. Basically a really saturated, lead kind of tone. (Think 80's metal, none of this death garbage from today).

I am currently playing my strat through a Vox AC4TV (awesome little amp, takes pedals really well). Now, bearing in mind that single coils and the Vox might not exactly be ideal for attaining this kind of sound, any ideas for what might still get the job done?

Thanks & all the best

Pedals are so subjective. Everybody has an opinion on them. For heavy metal I've liked the Boss Metal Zone since the days it was called the Heavy Metal.

I run a BOSS '59 Bassman into a Way Huge Swollen Pickle. For even more kick I fire up the zvex distortron. Add a little delay and all my bases are covered.

Get an amp with enough gain and you won't need a pedal. But I like an OD pedal with my strats and Marshall ( sd-1,bad monkey is great for the money), I like the MXR custom badass for distortion though if thats what you are looking for. Anything with my Orange amp does just fine without a pedal, plenty of gain on tap. All of this of course is just my opinion..

I use a Boss Metal Zone or a Boss OD/Distortion depensing on the sound I am trying to achieve. I am impressed with the Electro Harmonics Metal Muff and English Muffin. The English Muffin is definately on my wish list for my next pedal.

Most of the "metal pedals" are very versatile as far as high gain distortion. If you are not looking for "Death Metal" noise, don't scoop the mid range frequencies.

New ones are pricey though.

An Original Marshall Guv'nor - they're on eBay all the time and really sound great... if you like that Marshall tone! Not the new one, though - they sound too dark and fake.

This is what you want -
