I think it's worth it, it conditions the fretboard, and brings it back if it's dried out.

All my strats are maple but I have one that left the factory with a dull and bumpy finish on the face of the maple... the fretboard. (See post upstream).

Try the new Ernie Ball Fretboard Conditoner Wipes. My '88 Strat drank it up. It removed a bunch of gunk and made the rosewood look new again.

My personal preference is the maple fretboard. It just "feels" better to me and I seem to be able to get better sustain and definition out of each note, but maybe that's just the way I play. They also "feel" faster to me, but again, that may just be a personal characteristic of my playing. I've found that both rosewood and maple will wear over time, but I don't see it as a negative. It might not look pretty, but the fretboard on my 10 year old strat (maple) feels like "home" to me and I sem to play better on it, at least to my ears.

You know breeze, it's funny. I was in my local guitar shop the other day, trying out a few different Telecasters because I've been feeling the need to get one, and every guitar I got handed with a Rosewood fingerboard, I just completely hated, and if I played the same exact guitar with maple, it just FELT so much better.

Until now, I thought I was the only one.

I have a rosewood fretboard on my bass, but considering what that is, and what I paid for it, and how amazing the rest of the guitar feels, I have no problems with that being rosewood.

It's maple all the way for me.

I've played many different guitars over the last 25 years, and the one that I keep coming back to is the stratocaster, and I think the main reason is there aren't many makers that offer maple fretboards. Also, I think this has been asked before, but, what is the deal with any guitar with a floyd rose having a rosewood fretboard? Is there something about the wood that won't accomodate the locking nut? There have been a few here and there that I've seen with locking nuts, but they seem to be rarer than hen's teeth.

Hmm--somebody the exact opposite--interesting.

But as I've said before somewhere--some people prefer rosewood or ebony--some prefer maple--some don't care. Figure out which you like better--but I would go by how it feels to play--not how it looks or how you think it sounds (as it doesn't affect the sound.) Of course if you like both--then go by how it looks.

I prefer maple fretboard. I own a stratocaster with one piece maple neck and I have had the bass with rosewood fretboard, but buying a new precision bass I have choosen maple fretboard, for few reasons:
It looks better :D
It sounds ok, but I cannot compare it with rosewood one, becouse my rosewood one is a different bass, different pickups, body and so on,
It feels better in my hand :D

But ofcourse those are only my personal feelings.

I prefer maple. I like glossy necks. A glossy maple neck is the best. Its good for bending and just looks better. I like an amber aged look on Maple. That said, I do have a Strat with a rosewood board. Its not aweful, and most times I don't even think about it. I put a lot of lemon oil on it. I've heard maple is brighter and rosewood is more mellow. I'm not so sure about that, though.

Thanx for the answers about lemon oil :) Will try both lemon oil and the Ernie Ball conditioner, but I just had her in the shop for a set up for .11's and apparently they cleaned the fretboard for me as well, so I won't have to worry about it for now :)

What products could be recommended for keeping the strings clean and give them a longer lifetime? Or is just a waste of money if strings are changed frequently enough?
I only have one major store to go to and they'll just sell whatever they can so I really appreciate the help

I too started life as a Rosewood guy and switched around 2002 to Maple boards and now I dont even look at R/W guitars.

I think it just says Fender to me when I see a Maple neck.

as for the "myth" of the board wood not having any effect on tone , I have to say that has been a long standing "myth" and touted by many a luthier and even Guitar manufactures for many years and to my ears a truth and not a myth at all if maple boards dont have more spank and sparkle than R/W Then I have a very active imagination and so do thousands like me.

I have to say the maple fretboards look better because they match the headstock, and from what most others are posting they play the same, so I'd go with maple.
