Good morning all. This is my first post and i've noticed that many individuals introduce themselves. Im a college student and still a beginner at guitar. I grew up playing the piano at peabody but I've always had a desire to play the guitar instead. Parents lol Anyhow I've been teaching myself because my budget is tight but hopefully that will change soon when i graduate. I really want to start learning actual songs instead of just teaching myself the theory and learning my way around the fretboard with scales, notes, arpeggios, etc. I might as well get the difficult stuff out of the way so i can progress faster later.

Anyhow, i've asked my parents for an american deluxe ash strat because playing one is like shaking hands with someone for the first time and knowing that you will be life long friends. They are beautiful instruments. Plus its a worthwhile investment as opposed to constantly upgrading. I have a few guitars now but will gladly sell my mexi-strat if i get the deluxe. There is just something about the tones it can create and how inviting it is. You can do so much and even pull the Mark Knopfler sound out of the ash. Based on some internet reading there used to be a LSR roller nut on the american deluxe. Is there any reason why Fender changed that and went back to the synthetic bone? Also does it make a major difference? Im an engineering student so i understand the benefits of putting the string into a rolling pulley to ease friction and strain but what does that do to the vibration? One last question. This would be my first new guitar as opposed to used. I would like to keep this guitar, have it appreciate in value, as well as preserve the instrument. Are there things that i can. should, or might want to think about doing in the present/future to help this cause? Even decent books or sites could be helpful.

Any advice, feedback, knowledge or anything really would be welcome and greatly appreciated. Thank you so much

on the SSS versions of the deluxe models there is no lsr roller nut.

however, on the HSS version there is the roler nut as well as a bypass swicth (i think thats what its called)

thats just the difference between the SSS and HSS americna deluxe models

I'm not sure why Fender only offers the LSR on the HSS. It's most useful for keeping the guitar in tune when using the tremolo bar. My strat holds it's tune very well at all times, I'm not sure if the LSR contributes to that or not.

You will find that there are two schools of thought on this board concerning the LSR nuts. I am in the camp that favours them but there are some highly respected members here who do not. As far as the nut goes If you buy an HSS AD Strat with the LSR you can always reconfigure it to SSS and retain the nut if you wish. It's also possible to reconfigure a SSS Strat to HSS if you prefer the standard nut and want a humbucker.

As far as your guitar appreciating in value, you will have to wait 30 or 40 years for that to happen. As with all brand new consumer products your new AD Strat will depreciate roughly 30% as soon as you pay for it and carry it out of the store. I have owned 5 American Deluxe Fenders in the past and still own 2. They are both of the kind of calibre and quality that I will never sell them so the investment value or street value means nothing to me.

I think they should offer ALL strats with lsr nut options. I want them on all my strats with locking tuners and the locking tremolo.
If you use your strat like Hendrix Blackmore and Van Halen... Which I do. That stuff is priceless.

You won't get any argument from me on that point.

You're really a huge fan of the mini-floyd bridge.

I'm not certain if Fender will ship their new USA Deluxes with the locking bridge option next year.

Yep I am a huge fan of the deluxe locking tremolo on the Fender American Deluxe HSS Stratocaster with LSR. Only thing i did to mine was put in a set of Dimarzios and that guitar blows all the rest out of the water.
Jackson, Charvel, Kramer, Ibanez, etc cant compare. I owned them all.

Guess I am a LSR favororor myself. So often when playing one of my old Strats, like when I had 72, I would tune it and the low E string would go twang and that meant the string just unstuck itself from the nut and make the string go slightly out of tune. With the wound wire it was so easy for it to get hung up in the nut and then do that. The roller nuts really helped in that area, as far as I can tell, and beings most of the time one is fretting the strings out on the frets, the nut add or takes away only a very small part of the "tone", IMHO. I know these things get argued to death on forums, but 90% of all the Strats I have use roller nuts, either the Wilkinson or the LSR.

Did you ever played a Strat Ultra with Lace Sensors? This guitar had the mini-floyd bridge you're craving for.

I never played the ultras. I went straight from reissues to american deluxe lockings. I have seen a couple with lsr and locking tremolos at guitar center. My next strat will have those features and i will load it with dimarzios.

Perhaps your next Strat will also have a compound radius and a blower switch?

Not sure about the exact specs of your new axe ! :o
