OK, so they put Hendrix and Clapton in the 1 and 2 spots, a nod to the traditional favourites but Page and Richards next? What are they thinking about? Total record sales? It can't be guitar playing ability. I can thing of at least 20 people I'd put ahead of Page and about 40 I'd put ahead of Richards. I stopped looking after that. What would be the point? This is the reason I rarely, if ever, look at these kinds of lists. They throw out this title like the 100 Best Guitarists Of All Time or whatever but they dont' use any justifiable criteria to make their selections.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Why isn't Randy Rhoads in the top 20? This automatically invalidates this list.

I don't think you can say one guitarist is better than the other. Art is a matter of taste. Of course we are talking about professional guitarist here.

Is this list based on who is more commercially successful?, who had a bigger impact on young aspiring guitarist?, who has better chops?, who comes up with better riffs? Who knows...

But one thing must be said....In what world is Johnny Ramone a better gutiar player than Randy Rhoads? I like the Ramones, but come on know!

I saw this earlier on yahoo news. Rolling Stone lost any importance it may have had years ago. To even have Cobain anywhere near this list is a travesty.

I really don't know how they came up with this list. Some truly great players aren't even mentioned.

Still missing some great guitarplayers. What about Harry Sacksioni and Jan Akkerman(Focus). And in the 'metal' scene there are quite a few great guitarplayers that are way better than a lot in that list.

This recently discovered picture has been authenticated. It has been accepted by the Johnson Foundation after several years of scrutiny by experts. You can buy a copy on their web site.

....back on topic, RJ should be higher than 71, but it's all subjective, isn't it?

Image ....Mark.

A list of what, musical and technical ability..... :?:
Obviously that was not the criteria.

These lists are always more a result of a popularity contests than anything resembling an actual musicians list.

A list by Julliard or Berkley would be credible...Rolling Stone is entertainment only, sort of a hipper People's Rag...

I'm kind of puzzled about the subject of this thread. The heading says (sic) 100 Great Guitars while some responders and your link are talking about 100 Greatest Guitarists-which is it? I'll kill 2 birds with one stone since I'm unsure of the true topic-Jimi Hendrix with a Strat.

Jimi and EC apparently were judged almost equal.EC once said this of Jimi: "Jimi Hendrix was a gift that stayed with us for a while and then went back with the other gods." Quite a fitting accolade from a guitarist who himself has also been proclaimed "God".

Same here, I initially thought this was about the 100 greatest Guitars, not guitarists which is so redundant. There's a few there that really should not be on any list other than as noisemakers..
