I have a Fender Stratocaster, I believe it is a 1976 model. I'd like to know the value of it, as well as where I can find a buyer. It hasn't been played since around 1998, it has been in a case in my closet.

Depends where you live, but some places like Elderly Music in Lansing, Michigan should be able to help you.

Since I have a '79 model I watch the eBay auctions and I've never seen one go for less than $1100 on eBay...

+1 on Elderly's. I referred a friend to Elderly's in Lansing to sell a pre-war Martin. They sold it on consignment and were very happy with the top notch people and sales price.

That serial number looks strange. Why wouldn't the numbers be in a perfect line on a waterslide decal? Was quality control that bad in the 70's or is the decal bogus?

it does look odd. I thought when fender printed the decals the numbers were attached to the logo? i don't think anything would be shifted out of line.

Looking at a site that has lots of info on vintage Strats,it mentioned that in '76,the numbers "76" were in bold print with the rest of the serial numbers following...so that's just the way it lined up probably.

The first "76" is no bolder than the other five digits. It only looks that way because the flash is washing out the other five digits. Just look at the "Fender" name above the serial. It looks just the same as all seven digits of the serial number: bold than washed out. In any case, even if what you say is true, I see no reason for the serial numbers to not all be in a straight line.

Fender only used those "76" serial numbers for a small part of 1976; at some point they switched to the "S6" serial numbers. I don't remember where I saw it, but I saw a photo of a '76 Tele Deluxe and the "76" part didn't line up with the other numbers very well either. I guess I assumed that was on purpose so you could differentiate the "76" from the rest of the number. Fender had the same issue in 2010 when they briefly used those serial numbers that read "10XXXXXX" - you couldn't differentiate the "10" from the other numbers so they switched to the "US10XXXXXX" numbers.

is it possible the 76 was part of the main decal and the remaining 5 numbers were separate to match up with each instrument?

What needs to be differentiated? The first two digits are the year, the other five are the sequence number of the guitar. Not that hard to understand. :?:

It is hard to tell. Is that a decal or a silk screen? Hard to see any decal edges due to the flash.

Bill they couldn't even line up the tuners in '76. Let alone a small font used for serial no's. :D

Well, I did mention that possibility in my original post:

"Was quality control that bad in the 70's ..."
