I've played accousic guitars for years, just got my first electric - an American standard Strat HSS a couple months ago with a Mustang-III amp. I asked GC to set up the Strat for me since I'm not familiar with electric's. The problem is I can't get the top E & A to stay in tune, depending on what cord I'm playing. i.e. I get all strings in tune with a D or A cord, then I play an E or G cord the top E & A strings are tuned way flat. I get strings in tune with an E and G cord, then my A and D cords are out of tune. The tuning issue is even worse when I play bar cords. I just put on some new Fender strings, same issue. This really sucks, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Brookebree,

Maybe the intonation isn't set correctly. Open string tuning for each string should be the same as when fretted at the twelfth fret. Check and see if that is off. If so, the screws at the tail-end of the bridge plate are to adjust the saddles position, affecting string length to set the intonation. If a particular string is sharp when fretted at the twelfth fret, loosen (de-tune) that string to relieve the downward pressure of the string on the saddle, then tighten the screw for that particular string's saddle, which will lengthen the string span from nut to saddle. Re-tune the string and check again and readjust if needed. If the string is flat when fretted at twelfth fret, the string length needs to be shortened, so using the same procedure as above, loosen the screw for the saddle of that string.
