I'm currently in the market for either a new American Standard Strat or a used one. I came across this '81 in the color I'm looking for, plus it was made the year I was born, which is kinda cool. Plus I love the large 70's headstock. I do like the patina that's going on and the roughness of the guitar, but it needs a refret, and it's pretty rough. It does however come with the original case.

Are they asking a fair price? Let me know what you guys think.

Unless you just HAVE to have an old guitar, buy the new American Standard. This used guitar is gonna need some money in it if you wanna re fret. Besides....it's a 1982 model anyway :P

If you want a guitar from your birth year and are willing to pay then just buy it. Looks like a genuine 81 strat all 70,s design bullet trussrod/3 screw plate etc.

82 strats changed, least the so called Dan Smith guitars anyways and are a completely different look.

Partial refrets shouldnt cost too much anyways.

Only if this is a must have....For One its a 3 screw neck, there is no way of assessing how secure the neck is, which was the main issue with that set up. If the pocket is tight and the neck is snug then it isn't a problem, however if not then....

Personally, I would buy it as long as (1) I would have my friend Otto inspect it and (2) if major issues then a full return/refund would apply.

Comparing it to a new Strat doesn't apply, you would be buying a 30 year old Strat and it has to be judged on it's merits...Not as an Old versus New...
If you want a New Strat...Then buy a new Strat...
If instead you desire a 30 year old Strat..Then the choice is yours..

Thanks for the reply guys. I now see what you mean that it's an '82 going by the serial numbers, although I love the look of the guitar.

I'll more than likely just get a new standard. If only I could inspect this guitar and feel it before I bought it. That and it seems like it needs some work $$$ and who knows what else.

Correction: You can buy a new Fender American Standard for $899, but you can get it for $799 if you shop around. Guitar Center and other music vendors have deals during the Holidays. I got my American Standard for $799 with Fender's $100 instant rebate plus Guitar Center's $100 discount. :)

Did you use a coupon code? If so, what was it? I tried combining a coupon recently and it wouldn't let me cause Fender already has the $100 rebate. Thanks for the help.

Also, great looking guitar!
