Squier mini strat for the 6 yr old and a Squier Affinity series strat for the older one, as he will grow in to it very quickly. :)

Squier Affinity Stratocaster? Affinity Series?
I looked on website and they have a set... What do you recommend? separate or bundle?

Get a good 3/4 size Acoustic and learn. You learn to play acoustic you can play any electric!

+1 too true. Too many people try to just play electric, but they lose out on so much technique and skills that you learn playing classical/acoustic. I play classical and rock, I would know.

I bought my 9year old stepdaughter a nice Squier in an electric blue colour, and a new Mustang 1 amp. She loves it that I have an American Standard the same colour, and we practice together. Her hands don't quite reach big chords yet, but she will grow into it, and is learning to play scales up and down the neck.

I think an acoustic is too much for her size and strength right now. I will introduce that later on, but for now it has been most important to get her playing things she recognizes like Miley Cyrus or Justin Bieber. I have had students in the past get discouraged with acoustics their parents had bought when they really wanted to play tunes they liked on the radio. Start them on what they want and they will keep up their enthusiasm longer!

The mini guitars are good, but with the lack of good hardware, keep them in tune will be a problem. Also, the cheaper woods can sometimes cause the neck to shift, requiring constant neck adjustments. I've actually heard the best beginners guitars are the Squier Standard or Classic Vibe.

My son is 7 going on 8. I've considering purchasing a guitar kit for him and I to create his own guitar. They aren't too expensive and its a great bonding project....

I would personally go for a fender mustang cause of it's smaller 24.5" scale, plus it's still has that great fender sound and they're not too expensive.

I picked one up yesterday and noodles with it. It's a great guitar.

The Mustang sounds like a good idea but a squier strat would be easier to find... I own a telecaster thinline imitation from a Spanish brand called SX. It was £180 a plays like a dream, pretty sure they make a Strat imitation too so I'd recommend that. Good luck!

Acoustic teaches them good technic, touch, and strength and makes playing electric easy! Starts you out right.

I bought my neice an Epiphone acoustic for Christmas a couple of years ago, she took some lessons and did very well for awhile before kinda losing interest. One of her friends has an electric and I just got word she wants one too. Better keep my strats locked up before Santa brings one to her!

I would look at the Ibanez mikro GRGM21. From the reviews I've read and vids on Youtube it appears to be a superior instrument compared to the Squires. They also make them for lefties! I don't know about your 6 year old, but my 5 year old is playing a Czech made 1/4 scale classical guitar tuned to open G.

Let us know which you choose and how it works out.

I started at 8 years old, with a 3/4 size classical. At about 10, I think, I moved to a full size classical. I didn't have any real problems with the size of the guitar. It should be fine for your stepdaughter to have at least a 3/4 size acoustic or classical.
