Good Morrow!

I was wondering if I could get some advice. I play in a hard rock band and I primarily use a Les Paul custom and a Carvin DC400. I guess what im trying to say is that I use guitars that give me a really big sound and I was worried my American Standard won't give me the same punch. (I could be wrong) I was considering the YJM fury pickups because I like the tone Yngwie gets from them. Blackmore is another strat guy whose tone I love.

here is a link to my bands First song from out upcoming EP, it could give you a good indication of the type of music I play and the type of pickups that would work out best

Thanks people

A stock 3 single coil strat will not come close to the tone you are used to. However, it may be a nice change, to have a different pallete to work with. But if the strat doesn't do it for you stock, then putting in hotrails pickups (humbuckers that fit in single coil slots) will beef things up......a whole heck of a lot!

Thanks

Thats what I was thinking too, could inspire me to approach a riff or solo differently with the lower output single coils. I guess Ill have to wait till xmas!

Yeah, hot rails is the go (check out Dave Murrays guitar setup with the hotrails, killer for that big tone).

On a completely different note KILLER SONG Man! can't wait to here the whole EP!

Try these

http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/main/pickups.php?cat=strats&sub=contemporary&pickup=trilogy_suite
Or maybe the Sinner set.
I've used a good few BK pickups to date on different guitars, not all owned by my I hasten to add. Though I own two BK equipped.

They all do what they say on the tin.

Other than that, Dimarzio are the way to go for what you want. I got good results from the Fast Track 2. The Tonezones are good authentic single coil sized hum buckers but don't quite have enough punch for what you want despite the mid range on them.

Thanks guys. I'm glad you liked the tune. I was thinking BKP's but they are mighty expensive. Also the Dimarzios. Kind of wanted to stick with Alnico's but ceramic could be an option I guess. (besides, i like the look of standard single coil pickups haha).
Its great to know that the people on this board are so helpful

Nik, question on the bkp's. I find myself, much like the op, reaching for a humbucker equipped guitar (namely my tele blacktop and les Paul standard). Not so much for the tone, but more for the noticeable volume drop I get from switching between hb's to single. Our sound guy gets all pissy having to ride the levels all night.

I've often though about getting hot rails for the strat, but I've wanted to keep the single coil tone. Does the bkp's linked above give the same volume output with single coil tone? I've also thought about trying out the set Paul gilbert uses in his reversed ibanez iceman (fireman?). Any experience with them?

I'm sure the op would like to hear your feed back (not intentionally highjackin)

Dan

Ps purple haze, first set every week, gets treatment from the badger ;)

Hiya mate, glad you're enjoying the box.

In truth that fuzz should even out the volume difference between the S/C and H/B. If anything the H/B should be a little over compressed and sound in some ways quieter.
Hmmmmmm

All I can tell you is that I've found it very possible to balance S/C and H/B pickups on the same guitar. OK you have to sink the H/B and skywards the S/C. But it can be done with most regular pickups. I always thought the majority of the difference between the two was a sound/eq thing. H/B's having a much stronger middle than S/C's. Though I can tell you from experience the BKP Mules have a low output with a lot of treble.

AlNiCo/Ceramic, who cares. Seriously. The sound of a pickup has way more to do with the winds, magnet strength and wire gauge than it has the type of magnet. Though that does have some bearing on the strength of the magnet.
Get an underwound budget MIM ceramic magnet S/C. Theres no attack and punch on this planet like it. Once you eq past the brashness it can provide a great metal rhythm sound.

I wouldn't let it be a factor in pickup choice. There's been plenty of classic humbuckers throughout the last 35 years that have used ceramic magnets.

You're talking humbuckers versus single coils. No, it will not have the same punch unless you have a humbucker loaded strat. I have both. I have to adjust the gain/treble/bass when I change guitars on my amp and my OD pedal.

Also, Duncan makes this little single coils sized humbuckers if you don't want to replace your pickguard. Malmsteen has great pickups, but he also has an ultra high gain amp too with boosters to increase the output.

Or stick a Super 55 split-coil Stratocaster pickup set, drop in an S-1 switch for coil tap/split and get the best of both worlds in your fingertips without the annoying 60-cycle buzz associated with single-coils.

You can also add an Eric Clapton mid-boost circuit if you want more "roar" from your guitar.

Chromeface, did you listen to the OP's recording at all. A Clapton strat is really not the sound he needs.

It's about as useful for metal as a Hofner Jazz box.

you see, the thing is, I don't want to lose that distinct stratocaster tone, I just want to make sure it has the balls to keep up with the other guitars. I find Malmsteen has a pretty ballsy tone while keeping the strat sound as well. I guess You could call my rig hi gain as well. Laney lc-30 Tube amp and and overdrive and eq (midrange boosting)

Then you can compensate with a good pedal. The Wampler Esctasy is a good one for boosting/thicking up a strat without losing that famous single coil tone.

I have a 2011 HSS American Standard. The stock Diamondback humbucker in it is pretty hot. Another option is a Dimarzio Super Distortion. I have one of those in my Highway 1. Sounds better than the Diamondback. If you are going for SSS look, I think the Seymour Duncan JB Junior may be the answer.
