won't stripping be the hard part?


If you are serious about repainting it you can scuff sand it,paint it the color you want, then apply clear coat. However, if you take it all the way down to the wood, you will have to apply sealer, then primer, then paint, then finish with clear coat. Stewmac currently has a tutorial on their website regarding removing finish with a heat gun.

if i were to only remove the clear coat wouldn't the old finish serve as the sealer?

I've upgraded Squiers with Fender parts in the past, and I'm sure your pickguard will fit the guitar and the routed voids will accommodate the hardware on the guard. But I guarantee that you'll need to re-drill the guitar in places to line up under the pickguard screw holes.
