Definitely used, but used I can hold first, no ebay purchases of guitars.

If I saw what I was looking for in good condition, at the right price, near enough to where I live and at the right time (I can afford it) then I would consider it on equal terms as the new guitars.

However, surely some people have to buy new guitars or we would all just run out of guitars??? :D :D

If it plays right, then everything else is very secondary.

Niki, you put it very well. I don't buy guitars with a single thought of selling them down the road. I buy them because I like them and they make me happy. I've only sold five guitars in the last 40 years and I wish I had all but one of them back. The new ones may not come with mojo, but I think they pick it up pretty quick when they start hitting the bars. :)

And now that I think of it, that's pretty much my attitude when it comes to amps, too. I own a bunch of them and I'd guess the split is about 50-50 new vs used on them as well. The only amps I've ever sold were those that I had duplicates of, otherwise I've still got 'em all.

I wouldn't sell my current guitar. I worked a lot to get the money for it. It's a symbol of accomplishment.

Definately want to play and fondle the guitar first but as for preferences, I guess you could say used since I've never bought a new Strat.

Acoustics, I've bought used and new. Used higher end acoustics are not a huge cost savings over new. Sometimes a used one is more opened up and you don't have to wonder what it will sound like in 5 years.

With Strats and LP's the value drop is so significant, picking up a used one is a big difference in price especially if the seller is motivated.

I've never been adverse to buying used guitars as long as I can try it first and the price is right. The problem is most guys around here want 70% of new for their used guitars and I'd rather eat the 30% and know that my 5 year Fender warranty is valid. As a result I would say that only about 1/4 of my gear purchases have been used equipment.

I'll take either, or both, or one more of each.

Take your pick...please.

I've bought new & I've bought used, and I've gotten good deals both ways.

well depends the reason why are you getting. remember that you are not going to get a 69 new. most of them are very used and if you compare to a reissued. they are not the same so you would have to go for the used one.
also remember the budget of some people(including me) is not that high and if you want a decent guitar, you have more chances of getting a used one.

I prefer to buy new, but will pick up used stuff as well. It depends what the guitar tells me as I am playing whether it is a keeper or not.

I was told once that a guitar cannot play the blues until its spent at least one night in a pawn shop...

To me its a matter of economics. All three of my stratocasters came from the same pawn shop. I have seven guitars and the only ones bought new are my Washburn 12 string and Yamaha 6 string acoustics. All of my amps were used when I bought them also. If you've ever seen Pawn Stars on TV you know they give pennies on the dollar for the items they sell, and by the time they are put up for sale, they have had them for at least ninety days. Pawn shops don't like to have items sit in the store for a long time, they want their money back, so if you go regularly and check their inventory you can pick up some good deals. also, I never pay what they are asking, because they got the item so cheap, they usually have room to dicker. My 2004 50th aniv. Amer. Std. they wanted 700.00 for. I told them I'd give them 500.00. They said no and I walked away. Came back a couple of days later and fanned out five crisp 100.00's and they took it. A few months later they had two 2006 MIM strats in perfect condition that they were asking 350.00 a piece for. At the time I really wasn't looking for any more guitars, so I left without them. I stopped back in six months later and they both were still there. I still didn't really need another guitar but for the hell of it I offered 400.00 for the pair. They said they'd take 400 plus tax, I said no 400 out the door. Well Imagine my surprise when they agreed. After a little clean up and new strings, they play and sound as good as any I've played at GC. There are deals to be had out there! 8)

This is a debate I haven't seen brought up in a while, possibly not ever (at least directly as a thread). There are many guitar collectors out there that believe in buying new guitars because no one else has touched their guitars. Then again, there are many guitarists out there like myself believe that a used, even well worn, guitar has lots of mojo in them and those are the guitars they must have. However, there are many who like both. So here's my question to all of you (no, I'm not looking to buy a guitar), do you have to or prefer a new guitar over used and why? Does it matter the type of guitar, i.e. Fender, Gibson, Heritage, or G&L..etc.?

I actually prefer used because my tastes often change and cannot afford to have everything I want at one time. That way if or when I part with a guitar, my losses will be minimum at best. However, I've also found letting go of a used guitar is much easier then selling one bought new....

I prefer used because I tend to play them more. I don't treat them as "Case Queens". I don't worry about banging them up and don't have any qualms regarding modifications. I also like that I can get two used guitars for the price of one, as you can never have too many.
