Has anyone thought of an electronic down-tuner for an electric guitar? I'm tired of down tuning my guitar and re-tuning. Could it be done?

Yep - there have been a few purely electronic as well as several electro-mechanical alternate tuning systems over the years.

Fender's own recently discontinued VG Strat had this built in - it changed tunings through the Roland VG system that was built into the guitar.

Then there is the Roland VG system itself - you have to have either a Roland GK hex pickup or some type of hex or Roland output on your guitar to access it. It has both tunings and guitar/pickup models.

Line 6 Variax also does alternate tunings as well as guitar/pickup models

Gibson has their various Robot guitars that have moterized tuners that physically re-tune the guitar based on pre-sets.

There is also a system called Transperformance that can be installed into a guitar that mechanically tunes the guitar.

However, it would be very cool if someone could come up with a pedal that could adjust tunings on the fly.

Must admit I like the Variax 300, down tuning is a switch flick or knob (eyes watering) turn away. The Variax 300 I use, has been set up with custom tone and tuning e.g. a DADGAD Les Paul and 12 string acoustic, a Drop D Strat, etc. The Variax can be easily programmed with 20+ different tunings included in the software (design your own with a virtual capo) and if memory serves 27 different guitar models. Might not be the best guitar in the world but a hoot to play.
