Hi anybody, I have an american vintage 70's strat with 7.25 radius. Is it normal that I cant do the E1 string under 2mm (in 17th fret) cause the fulloffs will die. (.010 string set)

I have/had several guitars with a 7.25 radius and it varies from guitar to guitar on whether or not you can get extremely low action and still be able to bend.

I have an american vintage 60's strat, and its pretty easy for me to do bends on it. I can get a step and a half bend on the high e string at the fifteenth fret with no problem. I believe a good setup is very important, and also a good fret leveling. I also find that with vintage spec strats it helps to have a bit more neck relief than the standard fender spec. With that said, I agree that playability varies from guitar to guitar.
But remember that all the great players from the sixties and seventies like hendrix, clapton, blackmore played vintage guitars and all of them were capable of extreme bends. In the end a good setup, as always, goes a long way in terms of what your looking for.

Malmsteen uses 7.25 radius jumbo frets though.

Cheers,

In my experience with 5 Fenders with this radius, you can get low action and still have clean bends, but it requires a lot of tinkering with the setup. Everything must be exactly right, like the amount of relief, radius of the strings to match fretboard radius (very important), and string height. Also, you may just have to live with an ever so slightly higher action, but it won't have to be much higher at all really :) Keep tinkering...you'll find the sweet spot! Also, you could have a repair man give you a somewhat compound radius, by having them file the frets at the end of the fretboard to a flatter radius, and then you can easily have incredibly low action, clean bends.....and the guitar (wood anyways) won't be altered to a point that cannot be reversed :D

I agree completely. It will require more tinkering to get to the sweet spot with a vintage spec guitar. But it definitely can be done and I like tinkering with my guitars anyway.
